Date: Tuesday, 3 July 2012 (7:00a-3:10p)
Location: Bryant Park - between 40th & 42nd St. off 6th Ave. (plus 2 parks)
Reported by: Ben Cacace

Weather for 3-Jul for Central Park (6:51a-2:51p) < http://bit.ly/LkQO5t >:
- Conditions: Clear to Scattered Clouds
- Temperature: 73.0 to 88.0 to 86.0 F
- Wind direction: - WNW / Calm / WSW / N / WNW
- Wind speed: Calm - 6 mph (no gusts reported)

** Total species - 10 + 2 **

Spent a little over 5.5 hours in Bryant Park from 7:00a to 12:35p and saw
10 species including the continuing WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS. One started
singing at 7:29a and continued throughout the day. The singer has a tract
of missing belly feathers on its right side revealing what appears to be a
darker pattern at the feather base. The other bird, which also has a bright
white supercilium, was seen feeding at the same time the singing bird was
heard elsewhere. Its belly feathers are intact.

The male COMMON YELLOWTHROAT was seen in the north border garden drinking
at a water valve used for hoses. The 5 BARN SWALLOWS are a park first. Both
PEREGRINE FALCON and a pair of AMERICAN KESTRELS were also seen.

The only birds added from the other parks were MOURNING DOVE & AMERICAN
ROBIN. I was lucky to get the EUROPEAN STARLING flyover in Bryant Park.

Personal abundance categories based on close to 180 visits to the park.

'Rare' for Summer in NYC [1 spp]
- White-throated Sparrow - 2; Started singing at 7:29a. On bush in SE
section of border garden. Same bird singing from W edge of center section
border garden. Molting belly feathers on right side reveal dark base of
feathers. Back to SE section @ 8:20a. 2nd bird w/o molting belly feathers
on right side.

'Uncommon' seen less than 1 out 10 visits [2 spp]:
- American Kestrel - 2; F perched on 1071 6th Ave. at 12:23p to building W
of Grace on 42nd St. 12:26p F back to 1st building where M was perched.
Shortly after M dropped down to the roof & not seen again.
- Chimney Swift - 1 feeding high above at swallow heights.

[nysbirds-l] Otis Pike, Fresh Pond Area, Indigo Bunting, Scarlet Tanager

2012-07-03 Thread Frederick Hamilton
Early survey work lead to a spotting of an Indigo Bunting. While referring to
the field guide to double check that I didn't miss ID it (there has been a Blue
Grosbeak in the area) I was buzzed by a Scarlet Tanager both male and female.
It was a nice end to a long morning.
