I went to Watchhill today because this weekend is the last ferry to
there of the season. I was hoping to see raptors and late migrants.
The highlight for me was a flock of double-crested cormorants so large
it took several minutes for it to pass over.

This morning I made my first fall venture to the West End of Jones Beach.
Nothing unusual to report - the most unique find for me were several Cedar
Waxwings which I don't recall seeing during past migrations. Merlins were
aplenty - chasing off many birds including a lot of Northern Flickers. I

Joe Giunta's Brooklyn Botanical Garden birding class visited the West Pond ,
the South Garden and Big Johns Pond and trail. Birding was medium; vegetation
is still dense and the birds slow to find. They did move slow enough for all to
catch sight of and study.

Had my first nice migrants coming thru today. A pair of Common Yellowthroats
and a Swamp Sparrow are here now hopping around. Also had the first
White-throated Sparrow of the season with the swamp. A Hermit Thrush has been
hanging around too.
