[~BEGIN RBA TAPE~]

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, October
12th, at 10:00pm. The highlights of today's tape are LE CONTE'S
SPARROW, SEDGE WREN, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN,
WESTERN KINGBIRD, BLUE GROSBEAK, DICKCISSEL, LARK SPARROW,
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, and RED-HEADED WOODPECKER.

Some interesting land birds were found in the area this week, topped
by a LE CONTE'S SPARROW spotted at a back section of Floyd Bennett
Field last Saturday. Some photos were managed before the bird
disappeared, and it could not be relocated on Sunday. Other birds at
Floyd Bennett during the week included a PHILADELPHIA VIREO Saturday
and a BLUE GROSBEAK in the Community Garden from Monday through
Thursday, and a POMARINE JAEGER (sitting unhappily, based on the
photos) on a runway for a while on Wednesday.

In that same general area, a WESTERN KINGBIRD was found today around
the Fishermen's Parking Lot at Breezy Point.

In other city parks, Central Park featured a BLUE GROSBEAK in the
Ramble on Monday, and a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was among the good mix of
birds there Tuesday. Also on Tuesday, a flock of ~50 PINE SISKINS
visited the Lake's Upper Lobe, and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was reported
at the north end on Thursday.

Prospect Park in Brooklyn featured a NELSON'S SPARROW along with a
YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and a late BLUE-WINGED WARBLER on Thursday.

At Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, the AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was still
on the East Pond Thursday, where it was joined by a LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHER among the shorebirds and 15 SNOW GEESE among the waterfowl.

In Queens on Wednesday, a VESPER SPARROW was found Wednesday and again
today at All Faith's Cemetery in Middle Village, and a BLUE GROSBEAK
was there on Tuesday.

In Westchester County two AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, found Sunday in
Milton Harbor off Marshlands Conservancy in Rye, moved over to the
Lakeside Playland Park for Monday through Wednesday, but have not been
seen since.

A SEDGE WREN was reported today from an obscure location at Pelham Bay
Park in the Bronx.

Out along the southern beaches of Long Island, some good coastal
migration has certainly been topped by a heavy movement of PINE
SISKINS. High morning counts last Sunday and again on Thursday and
Friday produced totals close to 2,000 at sites such as Robert Moses
State Park, Jones Beach West End, and even out east in the Montauk
area, these sustained high numbers reaching epic proportions. Lesser
numbers of PURPLE FINCHES have also joined the flight.

At Jones Beach West End there were two CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS together
and a flyover DICKCISSEL at the Coast Guard Station hedgerow last
Sunday, with perhaps a different CLAY-COLORED near field 2, and birds
at Gilgo Saturday included a BLUE GROSBEAK and single CLAY-COLORED and
LARK SPARROWS, the latter staying at least to Monday.

Among the other highlights at Robert Moses State Park last Sunday were
three CASPIAN TERNS, both YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and BLACK-BILLED
CUCKOO, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, and a HOODED WARBLER.

At Smith Point County Park in Shirley, a female YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRD was spotted in a Brown-headed Cowbird flock last Sunday, and
two DICKCISSELS were noted there that day, while the summering
GLAUCOUS GULL was still present there today.

Last Sunday a BLUE GROSBEAK and DICKCISSEL were seen along Town Lane
in Amagansset.

Nice birds at the Theodore Roosevelt County Park in Montauk included
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO and BLUE GROSBEAK Sunday, and LARK and
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW plus DICKCISSEL on Monday.

Two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS and a

2012-10-12 Thread Andrew Baksh
In addition to the *Western Kingbird* today at Breezy Point, other notable
birds throughout the day included 8 *American Pipits* and a *Wilson's
Snipe*on the Cricket Field at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn.

Still some Siskins moving through at Fort Tilden this morning, but not as
many as I have seen the past few days at other locations. The big flight
today at Tilden seemed to be of Cedar Waxwings, with several flocks of 100
+ noted throughout the morning.

I have posted a few photos of the Western Kingbird here -

[nysbirds-l] Bald Eagle

2012-10-12 Thread ROBERT ADAMO

Thanks to Jack Clancy (visiting brother-in-law from Post Falls, Idaho) the
obligatory ride out to Montauk Point produced an immature BAEA seen flying,
relatively low, over Montauk Highway in Napeaque.

While there was a huge amount of surf fishermen spread out from the n/s of the
lighthouse up to and beyond the Camp Hero cliffs, we didn't observe one of them
bring in a "stripper"...or any other species of fish, for that matter. We did,
however, get an adult N.Gannet as it rounded the point !

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Vesper Sparrow

2012-10-12 Thread Daryl Cavallaro
I spotted the Vesper Sparrow in All Faith Cemetery in Middle Village again
this afternoon. I first saw it Wednesday but was unable to relocate it
yesterday. It has moved to a new location and is now near the General
Slocum memorial, along the paved road that is blocked off to traffic.

Also seen today were good numbers of both types of Nuthatches and Kinglets,
a Pine Warbler, Coopers and RT Hawk, and countless Yellow Rumped and Palm
Warblers.

A photo of the Vesper Sparrow as seen today has been posted here:

[nysbirds-l] Caumsett State Park

2012-10-12 Thread redknot
Had a pleasant afternoon birding Caumsett State Park. Had four kestrel hunting
simultaneously in the field west of the main building complex.  In the main
parking lot a merlin buzzed a flock of starlings but wasn't serious since it
had already made a fresh kill; the prey looked like a phoebe but I wasn't
positive.

Much activity in the fields and woodlands flanking both sides of Fisherman's
Road; several thrush species, several ruby-crowned kinglets, many flickers,
phoebes and yellow-rumped warblers, a few palms and blackpolls, and a single
parula. The highlight was a flock of about 4-0-45 pipits in the field that is
located on the east side of the road about halfway to the beach.

[nysbirds-l] Barrier Beach Migration

2012-10-12 Thread sy schiff
Jones Beach West End & Robert Moses SP 12 Oct

Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) found a restricted but great migration occurring
on the barrier beach. Few species were involved, but those that were were more
than impressive. Winds were strong and picked up as the morning progressed.
Therefore, the hawk flight was good with 3 falcon, 2 accipiter, Harrier and
Osprey species represented. However, almost all the raptors were Merlin, some
Peregrines and only a few of other species.

Yellow-rumped Warblers were everywhere. Northern Flickers were moving through
continually; a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Red Bellied Woodpecker among them.
Sparrows were very sparse considering the general movement noted as were other
small birds. Considering the wind and the numbers of Merlin, they could have
been keeping a low profile.

Finally the PINE SISKIN--flocks of 20-50 were on the move all morning, at least
2 dozen flocks or more. Our estimate of 1,000 was probably a low number, and
they were still coming through when we left the Hawkwatch. Most Impressive.

[nysbirds-l] Fort Tilden

2012-10-12 Thread Matthew Wills
An hour's worth of hawk watching at Fort Tilden this morning from 10-11 offered
us an average of one raptor ever two minutes, mostly Kestrels, Merlins, and
Sharp-shinned. There were also: three Osprey; 1 Peregrine; at least 1 juvenile
N. Harrier, which may have been a local bird; and a few Cooper's. The weather
turned completely in that time, the wind shifting and a cold front shutting out
the blue sky from the northwest.

A Belted Kingfisher was seen passing before I arrived, and a Commmon Loon flew
over the western end of the peninsular the "wrong way," northwards, while I was
facing the contra-migratory way.

Keep watching the skies,
Matthew
