American kestrel catching a Golden-crowned kinglet

Wood ducks (4 male, 4 female)

Ruby crowned kinglet-several
There was a strong flight today, as observed from Calvert Vaux Park,
at the mouth of Coney Island Creek in Brooklyn. Blackbirds were
moving in good numbers, as well as finches, pipits, bluebirds,
robins, etc. After spending much of the morning with flyover birds, I

A morning Day Tour to Hamlin Beach St. Park in Monroe County turned up 34
species with lots of duck movement and a number of highlights. Some of the
highlights included:
Red-throated Loon - 3
Common Loon - 50+
Red-necked Grebe - 1
Horned Grebe - 50+
Long-tailed Duck - 100+
Black Scoter - 5
A big thanks to Mike Yuan for finding then getting the word out about a
Grasshopper Sparrow in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. I was in Green-Wood Cemetery
at the time enjoying a big buteo flight (83 red-tails between 11:30am and 1pm)
when the text came in. The bird was spotted feeding on seeds along
The BLUE GROSBEAK was seen again today at Kissena Corridor (probably better
by Jeff Ritter than me), by the paved path that crosses at 148th Street.
Also in this vicinity were a Winter Wren, up to 10 Fox Sparrows, a Nashville
Warbler, and what in a brief look appeared to be a Tennessee Warbler.
In addition to the birds listed by John Laver for today I spotted a group
of 5 VESPER SPARROWS in the NW section of the park on the ball fields south
of the Bronx Kill. For me the best bird of the day was a single EASTERN
MEADOWLARK south of ballfield #42 in the northeast section of the park.

Biked the local parks since they've just re-opened. First stop, Randalls
Island. On the upside, Sandy filled up the fresh water marsh finally. Still
fair amounts of Savannahs in the north and Yellow-rumps and Chickadees
everywhere. The north salt marsh creek was filled with Brants and

My wife Liza and I went to the I-84 Overlook unofficial hawk watch site in
Greenville, New York after many years.
We started at 9:45 AM EST and the winds were blustery [level 5] from the
WNW with starting temperature 5°C, and in 4 1/2 hours we saw 2 Golden Eagle
[1 juvenile and 1 adult], 5 Bald

Just got electrical power back last night so this report is just a bit late.
But hopefully not irrelevant, even though no tropical species were involved.
Tuesday afternoon (10/30, 1:00-3:30)--between running errands--I made a
post-Hurricane Sandy search for storm-borne seabirds on large bodies of
Heads up people Evening Grosbeaks are in our area. I am in line trying to
get gas near the South Conduit Avenue in Queens. Of course with light I
have been birding much to the amusement of other drivers. To my amazement,
I just had a flock of 13 Evening Grosbeaks fly overhead.
