[nysbirds-l] Central Park 12/15 - WW Crossbills etc
Spent a pleasant afternoon in Central Park Saturday. Highlight of the day was White-Winged Crossbills high in the sweetgums just south of the Humming Tombstone area in the Ramble. They were hard to identify, being mixed with Goldfinches and quite high up, but I got at least one photo showing the distinctive bill silhoutte, plus when they flew out, other birders present recognized the flight calls. I uploaded a small set of photos at http://edgaillard.smugmug.com/Bird-ID/WWCrossbills-121215/27108220_5dfkcV and in particular http://edgaillard.smugmug.com/Bird-ID/WWCrossbills-121215/27108220_5dfkcV#!i=2274914546=j68hpvj=1=X3 shows the bill pretty well. Other highlights were an immature White-Crowned Sparrow at Evodia among the dozens of happy White-Throateds on the ground there, and a Carolina Wren singing away shortly before sunset in the Shakespeare Garden and offering a wonderful close view. [nysbirds-l] Strategy on seeing the Barnacle Goose @ Van Cortlandt Park Bronx...
Some folks have written to me offline about the best times to see the *Barnacle Goose* at *Van Cortlandt Park*, so I figured I would to a broadcast post on the list serve for those who might be interested. The Parade Grounds at Van Cortlandt Park could get very active on the weekends especially on Saturday's. If there are any cross country activities on a given Saturday, you had better get there by at least 7:30 a.m. to have a shot at the geese before the "feral primates" run the Geese off the field. Yes, there are folks whose job it is to clear the field of the birds + the usual knuckleheads who think it is fun. As it gets colder, there are less activities in the form of track events on the field, but one still has to deal with dogs off the leash and those dog owners who take pleasure in letting their dogs run through the geese flock. When this happens, sometimes the birds may circle back otherwise they head to the lake or golf course - *check those areas if you do not see the flock of Canada's on the field with the target bird.* As far as time, early is better *(as far as I know, but late afternoon could also be good)*. The Geese tend to fly in from the Lake around 7-7:30 and by 8:00 a.m. they are already gathering in numbers and setting up in the areas on the field where they will roam and feed. If you could make it during the week, that is probably the best times for less disturbances on the field and don't forget, there is a Cackling Goose (CACG) around as well. I have posted some photos I took today of both the Barnacle and Cackling Goose here ( http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2012/12/van-cortlandt-bird-walk-report-12-15.html). Good Luck if you try for either birds. Good Christmas Count Birding!! [nysbirds-l] Caumsett State Park Birds (Suffolk Co.)
We birded Caumsett State Park today as part of the Northern Nassau CBC. Highlights of the day's birding was an American White Pelican seen in the late afternoon flying east over Lloyd Harbor towards Huntington Bay. Perhaps this is the same bird that was seen in early November at Lloyd Point by Annie McIntyre. Other birds of interest was a Nelson's Sparrow that unexpectedly popped up in the Spartina grass at the Caumsett marsh, a flyby White-winged Crossbill along the beach, a Cackling Goose in the hundreds of Canada Geese (comparison photos of the two geese are on my flickr site), and an Eastern Phoebe found by Jerry & Beth Platt at the Seminary on the east side of West Neck Road in Lloyd Harbor Village. It was a great weather day for birding and the birds cooperated. [nysbirds-l] NYC: Randalls' Is., Sat. 15-Dec incl. ICGU, COGO, 4 raptors
Full list at < http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12295561 >. The sub-adult ICELAND GULL was perched on the New York Post building across the Bronx Kill seen from the northeast section of the island. It had an all dark bill, dark eye, a light scaly pattern to the wings, the very light wingtips appeared light gray in the scope. In flight it showed a white tail with a light gray terminal band. Similar in size to the nearby perched Ring-billed Gulls. Close to shore just east of ICGU was a male COMMON GOLDENEYE. After feeding for a few minutes it headed east toward the Con Ed plant in Astoria. Raptors seen: — Peregrine Falcon: an adult was perched on the south side of the top of Hell's Gate Bridge. — American Kestrel: a male calling high in a tree along Wards Meadow Loop north of the RFK bridge and west of the soccer fields. — Cooper's Hawk: an adult flew into the area where the AK was perched. The CH continued south and the AK moved to a nearby perch. — Red-tailed Hawk: an adult was hunting around the Bronx Kill just west of the Bronx portion of the RFK Bridge. [nysbirds-l] Fwd: Barnacle Goose, Wellwood Avenue, Wyandanch (Suffolk)
Attached are a couple of digi-photos of the Barnacle Goose I found on Wellwood Avenue. I initially noticed the goose when it was slightly obscured by the larger Canada's. Lighting was tough but Chase and I were able to get a good angle on sun for some solid viewing. The bird had no leg bands and it seemed to have all its toes. We estimated somewhere in the realm of 300-400 Canada Geese. Vastly different than this morning when we had zero in this field. As I mentioned, this field is noted as St. Charles Cemetery, which runs along the west side of Wellwood Avenue in Wyandanch. I believe a Barnacle was seen in this area a couple of years ago. The birds were east and north of the mulch piles. A good day to be out. Our CBC went well with a very cooperative AMERICAN WOODCOCK as just one of the highlights at Uplands Farm. I noticed it "tip toeing" beneath some dense shrubs. It posed for some great photos and even a video. http://www.flickr.com/photos/39025168@N07/ Best, Derek Rogers Sayville Begin forwarded message: > From: Derek Rogers > Date: December 15, 2012, 4:08:26 PM EST > To: NY Bird List List > Subject: Barnacle Goose, Wellwood Avenue, Wyandanch (Suffolk) > > I figured I'd get the word out quickly with the fading light.
