After a visit to the VA Clinic in the Suffolk Co. Court Complex
in Riverhead, I decided to continue south on Route 51 to check out
the Eastport Sod Farms, where I found Gary Straus looking at 16
Black-bellied Plovers. He also had a small group of black-bellies, in
addition to 1 Golden Plover, take

Nighthawk. Coincidence that it is the ABA Bird of the Year (BOY)?
Coincidence that the prior BOY was the Evening Grosbeak - elected right
before the largest winter finch irruption in decades? Unofficially, of

I’m having luck with Common Nighthawks this fall. I counted 6 in one group late
this afternoon (7:10 PM) on the Orient ferry as we passed Plum Island, and
another lone individual at 7:30PM.
All were heading west. Nothing else of note on the water.

At about 7:00AM this evening a wave of Common Nighthawks flew west across
Heckscher State Park, perhaps some of the same birds observed by Derek Rogers
in nearby Sayville. We conservatively estimated about ninety birds. After
milling around Heckscher for a short while, the birds headed south
Similar to Derek' Roger's post of earlier tonight, my wife Lynne & I had 23
common nighthawks moving NE to SW about 7:20 pm @ Squassux Landing,
Brookhaven Hamlet this evening.

At 7:10 PM, a large group of Common Nighthawks erupted out of the Brown's
River's East Branch while looking south on Middle Road in Sayville.
I tallied 64 individuals as the group swept across the river, circling from
east to west. This is the largest group of Common Nighthawks that I've

Rockville Centre NY. Best showing since 1990.
