Yesterday, because of Tuesday night's n/w winds, I opted to pay my first
visit of the season to the Fire Island Hawk-Watch. I arrived mid-morning,
and left ~ 1215. The weather was great, the company was great, but the
birding was slow. The wind stayed n/w, until coming around to s/e about
1130, but
I realize this is outside of the NYS area, but thought some might be
interested in this competition. This notice is posted with the kind

There was a report (written that way simply as I didn't observe
personally) of Vesper Sparrow at the meadow on the upper south slope
of the Great Hill, apparently found by Martin Carney, & also seen by
others, including Tom Per
Given the cold front and reports of a good number of migrating birds on the
barrier beach, a group of birders with the same thoughts on their mind,
that it could be a good day for migrants, converged at Alley Pond Park, in
Queens this morning.

After a short walk around Alley Pond Park produced a smattering of birds, but
nothing out of the ordinary, Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) traveled out to the
riverhead sod fields. There at the"Osborn/Sound Ave" field we found 3 dozen
