Certainly not as "birdy" as the reports from other sites suggested but there
were birds in the sites mentioned in the SUBJECT line. However, one had to
cover a lot of ground to get them. I wondered if the winds had anything to do
with what was observed since it was windy at both Fort Tilden an
Today Mearns member Steve Schuyler came down from Woodstock and we covered some of the black dirt area to see what was around. He was specifically hoping for Golden Plovers. When we made a pass through Skinners Lane and all the way out through the old Warren Sod Farm we found nothing of interest
The Saturday morning Birdwalk began at 11:00 and we birded until 3:15. It was a
spectacular day.
The broad winged hawks started moving early and we had the good fortune to
see them flying single file and then start to kettle up and rise on a thermal

It was an absolutely beautiful fall day in Inwood Hill Park in northern
Manhattan today and the birds did not disappoint. I went into the park twice
during the day: from about 9 am to 11:30 am and again in the afternoon from
about 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Total species was about 50 including 13 warblers
There was a decent morning flight along the barrier beach today. I was only able to observe about an hour and a half of the flight (from 6:45 to 8:15) and there was still a fairly good number of birds passing through when I left. The flight was highlighted by a Western Kingbird that flew by Field 2
The Sands Point Preserve (Nassau County) was extremely active this morning from
8:30AM thru noon, reminiscent of the good ole days in the late 70s, and worth
the $10 dollar fleecing today.
Highlights were 17 species of warblers (especially noteworthy was CAPE MAY

Here is a complete checklist of the birds that I, and many in my group observed
this morning during my NYC Audubon bird walk in Van Courtland Park. Thanks to
Tom Fiore, who rightly pointed out that I failed to mention that VCP is in
Riverdale, NY in Bronx County. The park is most easily accessed
Should note Connecticut was identified by my son Ryan. Now observing two common

In response to the question by Angus Wilson, I was in warbler heaven this
morning at Rockefeller State Park in Westchester county. Whereas the park
was nearly devoid of migrants two days ago, I was swimming in warblers
today, with multiple large mixed flocks. Black-throated green was by far

Isaac Grant and I just found a Dickcissel along the southern fence
line of the golf course at RIIS Park. Good luck if you try for it.

At about 8:45am today I was walking back west along Burma Road perhaps a
half mile past the end of the camping area at Smith Point County Park when
I found a Western Kingbird to the North (bay side) of the road. It flew
off to the West after I watched it for a minute or so.

There is currently an adult plumaged Red-headed Woodpecker in the tall oaks in
the area behind the nature center and the restored marshlands behind the public
pool. First spotted by Persephanie Westervelt, a participant in my NYC Audubon
bird walk this morning and seen several times by many in a
As predicted it is quite birdy in Central Park this morning with good variety
of warblers and other neotropics. Black-billed Cuckoo and Yellow-breasted Chat
showing nicely in fruiting trees off Maintenance Meadow nr Ramble.
Very curious to know how the other city parks are doing and to hear from
