[nysbirds-l] Kumlien's/Thayer's Gull on CP Resevoir Sunday

2014-02-03 Thread AA Fawkes
Apologies for posting late. An immature white-winged gull, possibly a
Thayer's, was on the reservoir Sunday, along with several hundred other
gulls and a definite Kumlien's. There has been quite a bit of debate on
various facebook groups, and I would welcome more opinions. I'm going to
try to re-find the bird tomorrow to get better pictures, as the ones I've
got are distant and overexposed.

[nysbirds-l] County & State Listing - Submission Deadline is March 1

2014-02-03 Thread Carena Pooth
Many thanks to those who have already submitted their reports! This note is a
friendly reminder to those who haven’t sent their data in yet.

The NYSOA (New York State Ornithological Association) County and State Listing
Project is now accepting data for 2013. If you’d like to get your numbers into
the 2013 report, don’t miss the March 1 deadline. Data may be submitted online
or via fax, email, or USPS.

If you’re new to this and it sounds interesting, read on.

Participation in this fun, friendly competition is open to anyone who is a
member of NYSOA or one of NYSOA’s member clubs, or who is a Youth Member of
NYSOA’s NYS Young Birders Club (NYSYBC).

Started in 1992 by Berna Lincoln, the project continues to engage many
participants across the state, some of whom have not missed a single year since
the beginning. The ultimate objective of the project is to encourage birders of
all levels to get out and bird the many varied habitats of New York State and
report their sightings throughout the year to local clubs, NYSOA’s regional
editors, and eBird.

After the close of each calendar year, participants send in their life list
totals for the entire state, the 10 Kingbird regions, and/or the 62 counties.
You can send in just one number or as many as 74, or anywhere in between – it’s
your choice depending on where you’ve birded and what records you’ve kept. A
compilation is produced annually and published in NYSOA’s newsletter and now
also on the NYSOA website at http://nybirds.org/ProjCountyLists.html. Online &
printable forms, plus a map of the ten Kingbird regions of the state, are
available on that web page also.

Join in on the fun – but don’t miss the deadline! And remember, no reports
submitted in previous years are automatically carried into the next published
list – the slate is wiped clean each year. If you want to be listed, you must
submit your report, even if your numbers haven’t changed since the last one you
sent in.

By the way, a complete archive of all County & State Listing Report
compilations since the project started is now available! Check it out at
http://nybirds.org/ProjCountyLists.html.

That's what they are! They winter commonly on LI, especially where there is
bayberry.

[nysbirds-l] Myrtle Warbler?

2014-02-03 Thread david
I took a brief trip to the Jones Beach coast guard station early Saturday (2/1)
and saw what I believe to be several (5+) Yellow-rumper Myrtle Warblers. I've
seen these guys late into the Fall but is it unusual to see them at this time
of year? From what i've read they generally overwinter further south and this
would be above the northern limit of their range in early February. I've posted
a photo below as I may be incorrect with the ID. Any comments would be helpful.
