[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: ducks and swans, signs of spring

2014-03-10 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I was at the Preserve today around 5pm by the pond at Pittsburgh Avenue and
walked up a little passed Clark St.. Redwinged Blackbirds were out in full
force singing, as were Cardinals and Song Sparrows. I saw some Skunk
Cabbage along the stream so the first flowers are starting to "bloom". On
the pond were mostly Mallards, some Black Ducks, Canada Geese, and Mute
Swans. There was one female Common Merganser on the pond and a drake flew
overhead. Also saw a single Wood Duck and Green Winged Teal. At the pond
by Sunrise Highway again were mostly Mallards with a few domestic types
mixed in. Some Hooded Mergansers were also present. One thing that seemed
odd was that I found at least 2 dead Mute Swans (possibly 3) a little south
of Clark St. I just hope that they weren't killed by someone.

Good birding,
Rob in Massapequa

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebes - Argyle Lake, Babylon (Suffolk)

2014-03-10 Thread Peter Morris

Everyone has probably had their fill of Red-necked Grebe reports by now, sorry
if that is the case.

There are 2 this afternoon on Argyle Lake in Babylon that are absolute
stunners. They ranged widely around the lake, occasionally together but came
really close at times allowing for great views.

I also had my first (two) Tree Swallows of the year foraging over the lake.

All the best,

Pete

2014-03-10 Thread Joel Horman
This is presently the only forested area in the central Suffolk area
where the trails are mostly clear of snow. A ramble of several miles
produced 2 Eastern Bluebirds, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and a trio of
easily spooked Common Mergansers (1 male, 2 females).

The posted hours are now sunrise to sunset, a welcome change from their
usual banker's hours of 8AM-4PM.

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe on Patchogue Lake (Suffolk)

2014-03-10 Thread Derek Rogers
I had the pleasure of viewing a Red-necked Grebe at very close range yesterday
afternoon while birding Patchogue Lake.

The bird favored the south end of the lake and best viewing is from East 2nd
Street, located on the west side of the lake.

Lee Stocker just emailed me, reporting that the bird continues as of this
afternoon.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach and Pt. Lookout

2014-03-10 Thread syschiff
Jones Beach & Pt Lookout 10 Mar

After scanning from the Coast Guard Station, Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) then
walked to the inlet. That's when the blizzard arrived. We returned to our cars
and drove over to WE #2. A crowd (50+) of SNOW BUNTINGS erupted in the driving
snow along the parking lot edge. Land birds at the west end; 2 YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLERS and 2 AMERICAN ROBINS

The snow stopped and we went over to the Nature Center. Three KILLDEER were on
the grass by the flag pole. In the red cedars in front of the building, 20
CEDAR WAXWINGS were feeding on cedar berries. (Snow Buntings in the snow and
Cedar Waxwings in the cedars---kind of cool).

At Pt. Lookout west jetty (closest to the parking lot), there were approx. 10
COMMON EIDER, 4 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, RED-THROATED LOON,
COMMON LOON, HORNED GREBE and 6 PURPLE SANDPIPER that flew in, landed
momentarily and continued west toward Long Beach. No Long-tailed Ducks were
seen today either place.

Good birding. Sy

[nysbirds-l] Central Park reservoir, NYC 3/10

2014-03-10 Thread Thomas Fiore
Monday, 10 March, 2014 - Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

A drake & hen Red-breasted Merganser, as well as a pair of Hooded
Mergansers were present, and today, 6 Wood Ducks (2 hens, 4 drakes)
were seen all on the reservoir. As well, numbers of N. Shovelers may
have dropped just a bit there, & Buffleheads were again in modest
numbers. The gull numbers appeared about the same, & several hundred
Canada Geese were around, again as yesterday. It is certainly
possible that the red-necked grebe is still present at the reservoir
but it was not noticed by anyone in the noon hour, so it may have
moved out. As ice continues melting and waterbirds are obviously going
to be moving, it should be well worth checking here, in weeks to come.

good end-of-winter birding,

RE: [nysbirds-l] Update on ducks at Essex Ferry?

2014-03-10 Thread Joan Collins
Hi Bert/All,

The Tufted Duck was observed at the Essex Ferry Dock location late on
Saturday (posts to Northern New York Birds can be viewed on the ABA website
at: http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY07 ). The temperature is warming
today and tomorrow, but the ice is so thick, that it probably won't open up
areas outside the ferry channel yet. On Wednesday, a major winter storm is
forecast for northern NY and Vermont - with the potential of over a foot of
snow! It will be very cold again on Thursday, so I suspect that the
waterfowl will still be found in the ferry channel - and hopefully, the
Tufted Duck among them! Best of luck to you!

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End: ducks and Tree Swallow

2014-03-10 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I was at Jones Beach this morning - despite the flurries, saw a lot of
birds. At the Coast Guard Marina, saw Red Breasted Mergansers, Scaup,
Horned Grebes, Long Tailed Ducks, Brant, Red Throated and Common Loons.

On the median saw about a dozen Robins, Flicker, Red Winged Blackbirds, and
Common Grackles. The flurries impeded looking for the Shrike, but saw a
single Tree Swallow fly over the West End 2 lot.

easily spooked Common Mergansers (1 male, 2 females).

The posted hours are now sunrise to sunset, a welcome change from their
usual banker's hours of 8AM-4PM.

[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: ducks and swans, signs of spring

2014-03-10 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I was at the Preserve today around 5pm by the pond at Pittsburgh Avenue and
walked up a little passed Clark St.. Redwinged Blackbirds were out in full
force singing, as were Cardinals and Song Sparrows. I saw some Skunk
Cabbage along the stream so the first flowers are starting to bloom. On
the pond were mostly Mallards, some Black Ducks, Canada Geese, and Mute
