RE: [nysbirds-l] Avocet continues on the East Pond @ JBWR

2014-08-02 Thread Steve Walter
Someone mentioned to me today that I was overdue for something new on my web
site (although I have been working on moth content, with two new underwing
species for Jamaica Bay recently). As for birds, I needed something to work
with. This Avocet will do. I posted a picture at
http://www.stevewalternature.com/ , for anyone interested (I understand Avocets
are not for everyone).

What else, as long as I’m wasting space on the list? A WESTERN SANPIPER here
and there, among the gazillions of Semis. Maybe not quite that many, but it
seemed like that was the only shorebird species south of the island. STILT and
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were 2 each, at least.

[nysbirds-l] South Fork LI: Storm-Petrel slam (8/1/2014)

2014-08-02 Thread Angus Wilson
Yesterday, John Shemilt, Derek Rogers and I took advantage of a short
window in the generally unsettled weather to venture offshore in search of
game fish and other pelagic wildlife. We traveled overnight and fished the
eastern canyons and shelf edge roughly 90-100 miles southeast of Shinnecock
Inlet and all within New York waters. Pelagic bird numbers were
surprisingly low but as summarized below, we happened upon some quality
birds.

The excitement began shortly after dawn with a WHITE-FACED STORM-PETREL
feeding with fifty or so Wilson's Storm-Petrels over a small fish oil slick
that we'd dropped. This is the first time any of us had seen this generally
solitary species feeding right amongst other storm-petrels. Unfortunately
another fishing boat sped over to us thinking we were onto something and
insisted on repeatedly trolling right through the middle of the
storm-petrel flock at speed. They soon drove away the White-faced and broke
up the slick. Fortunately we managed some photos before we were so rudely
disturbed but the light was marginal.

Next we encountered 3 AUDUBON'S SHEARWATERS feeding on isolated fragments
of sargassum. A few miles further on we found much larger patches of this
unique pelagic macroalgae but oddly these fields of weed were essentially
birdless.

In another deep water area we passed several LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS (or more
accurately they passed us) and then flushed a couple of BAND-RUMPED
STORM-PETRELS off the water. Fortunately we had laid down another slick a
few miles away and returning to it found 8 to 10 BAND-RUMP STORM-PETRELS,
along with 80+ Wilson's and a single very worn LEACH'S that we enjoyed
studying. The Band-rumps were very cooperative, providing ample
photographic opportunities and they swooped and bounded over the slick. In
the same general area we encountered a small pod of STRIPED DOLPHIN, a
state tick for all three of us. Fuller details and photos of these rarities
will be included in our eBird checklists and NYSARC reports.

The near absence of shearwaters yesterday was very unexpected. Despite
nearly ideal conditions we tallied a grand total of two, yes you read it
right, two Great Shearwater for the entire day and struck out completely on
Cory's Shearwater (zip, zero, nada). This seems unprecedented for a lengthy
offshore trip in mid-late summer. Where are they? Often we find higher
numbers of shearwaters over the shallower shelf waters but there were
almost no birds at all on the 70+ mile run home. This lack of inshore
activity mirrors the predominantly negative reports from recent land-based
seawatches. Alas we also drew a blank on avocets both inshore and offshore,
even though we were alert to the possibility (no letters please).

Regrettably I will not be aboard the scheduled Paulagic trip out of
Freeport (11-12 Aug) but hope the news of these goodies will be useful to
those still thinking about going. We were further east than the areas the
Freeport trip is likely to visit but clearly some Gulf Stream birds have
begun to percolate into NY state waters. It is always hard to predict what
you will find offshore but you can never know unless you go.

Cheers, Angus Wilson

[nysbirds-l] Black Skimmer Friday - No

2014-08-02 Thread tigger64
The Black Skimmer found by John Germain and seen Wed and Thurs on Fulton's Lake
Neatahwanta was not seen on Friday. Observers were present from 4pm until 9pm.
I'm not suggesting it's gone or won't come back - the lake itself seems good
for it but does not have a lot of loafing areas.

Here's a link to a cell-phone photo of John's camera screen. The bird was
perched on a concrete drainage pipe on the frontage road (Barrett Dr) in the
northeast corner of the lake just south of the bend in Rte 3. John also saw it
skimming the near-shore areas.

[nysbirds-l] Postponed ELIAS Field Trip to Dune Rd., Hampton Bays, LI

2014-08-02 Thread Eileen Schwinn
Eastern LI Audubon has rescheduled it's Dune Road Field Trip to Sunday, August
3, at 8:30AM. Meeting will take place at the bayside parking lot of Tiana
Beach., Hampton Bays, LI. Temporary, day parking permits for non-Southampton
Town residents will be provided.
Eileen Schwinn
(Echoing Andrew Baksh's words of earlier - "Shorebirding in the rain - Try it -
you might like it." Six of us did this AM at Tiana - and were lucky enough to
see six Whimbrel, and two Clapper Rail, among the usual suspects.)
