[nysbirds-l] Question regarding Monk Parakeets

2014-12-23 Thread John Lazzaro
I've seen several reports of Monk Parakeets at Seamans Neck Park in Seaford;
despite them being domestic pets, is it safe to assume that they are an
established species in the area or just vagrants, therefore ineligible to be
counted for one's lifelist? I'm home for the holiday break and was curious as
to how long they have been there and where to spot them.

Thanks!

[nysbirds-l] NYS eBird Hotspots - New and Renamed Locations

2014-12-23 Thread Ben Cacace
Newly created and renamed hotspots have been updated on the wiki pages. A
summary of the changes can be found here:

http://ebirding-nys.wikispaces.com/NewHotspots
http://ebirding-nys.wikispaces.com/RenamedHotspots

County totals have been updated for all 62 county pages which includes
total number of species and the equivalent color code plus updates to the
alphabetical list on the home page:

http://ebirding-nys.wikispaces.com/Birding+in+New+York

A bug has recently developed on the wikipages where the map and BirdTrax
boxes in the right panel have been narrowed if there is text for links and
notable finds in the left panel. The developer of wikispaces has been
notified and passed this onto the programmers.

Enjoy!

[nysbirds-l] St. Charles Cemetery and Area - 12/22 and 23 (Suffolk County)

2014-12-23 Thread Brent Bomkamp
This afternoon at 2 pm, as Sean Sime reported earlier, the *Barnacle Goose*
continued along Wellwood Ave. at St. Charles Cemetery until it was chased
away by the cemetery groundskeepers. The flock appeared to land at the
Colonial Springs Country Club, which is private. Additionally, there were
now* four Greater White-fronted Geese*, all adults, present in a goose
flock viewed from the Pinelawn LIRR Station in Pinelawn Memorial Park.

The *Eurasian Wigeon* originally seen in late November continues on the
Mill Pond in Centerport as well, along with 20 Canvasback.

Yesterday, an *Orange-crowned Warbler* was at the capped Huntington
landfill off of Town Line Road in East Northport, as viewed from the
pipeline right-of-way that runs along the back side of the landfill. It
was a somewhat brighter individual than I am used to seeing, with little
difference between the color of the body and the head. Also worth noting
in the area were three Marsh Wrens at the Makamah Preserve and a pair of
Redhead at Fresh Pond, both in Fort Salonga.

[nysbirds-l] Rockland 68th CBC Summary

2014-12-23 Thread Alan Wells
The 68th Rockland County Christmas Bird Count was held Sunday, December 14,
2014. Temperatures ranged from 34 to 44 °F with Dew Point temperatures
ranging from approximately 29 to 32.7 °F. Peak wind gusts ranged from
approximately 3 to 10 mph from the N/NW throughout the day. No snow on the
ground and ponds and rivers were ice free.

Forty-one field counters and eight feeder counters tallied 16,115
individuals representing 88 species (plus American Black Duck X Mallard
hybrid). One additional species—a single Snow Goose was found during Count
Week. The number of species is about average for the post-1978 period (when
count areas were standardized). The number of individuals counted is below
the median count for both periods (post-1978 = 25,062; post-2003 = 20,149).
The top five species—Canada Goose (4,238), European Starling (2,323),
Ring-billed Gull (1,446), Common Merganser (985), and House Sparrow
(797)—made up 61% of the total number counted.

Highlights:

Red-necked Grebe – New to the count in 2014. Two seen at Piermont Pier
headed downriver. Searched for the following day but not found.

Glaucous Gull – Juvenile seen at Piermont Pier. Only 4th occurrence on
count. Not found the following day.

Short-eared Owl – 5th occurrence on count.

Common Loon – 9th occurrence on count. Seen in Hudson River at entrance to
Bowline Pond. Headed upriver after a small boat passed nearby.

Wilson’s Snipe – 16th occurrence on count.

Misses:

Swamp Sparrow– seen in 59 previous years.

Common Goldeneye - seen in 58 previous years.

Eastern Towhee - seen in 48 previous years.

Killdeer - seen in 34 previous years.

Ruffed Grouse and Ring-necked Pheasant were again missed this year. Both
have been seen in 40 past years, but are now are likely extirpated from the
county. Ruffed Grouse have not been counted since 2001 and Pheasant not
since 1995.

Thanks to all of the Rockland field and feeder counters!

Complete count details will be posted to www.rocklandaudubon.org within a
few days.
