[nysbirds-l] Ulster County Gyr Falcon/ Town of Shawangunk

2015-02-07 Thread Curt McDermott
The previously posted Gyr Falcon was relocated today by Matt Zeitler, at
approx. 3:05PM. Between that time and 5:00PM, approx. 40 Birders enjoyed long
looks at this exquisite bird. The bird was initially found perched in a tall
Pine Tree, West of Hoagerburgh Rd. and just South of Bates Lane. After flying
off, the bird spent an extended time eating over a kill on Old Fort Rd. Old
Fort Rd. is a dead end directly across Hoagerburgh Rd. from Bates Lane. The
bird was eating inside the fenced in area on the south side of the road. For
those familiar, there is usually a pond which is not visible at this time due
to ice and snow cover. The bird then flew back to the original Pine but soon
returned to Old Fort Rd. and perched atop a Telephone Pole. Some time after
5:00PM the bird flew directly North toward the Shawangunk Cliffs. For
those trying tomorrow, please respect the locals. WE, the local birders, have
had a good relationship with the residents of this area for Decades and this
relationship should be continued after this bird leaves. Please do not encroach
on their properties or on the bird. I have included a link to a map of the
area. https://www.google.com/maps/@41.6285641,-74.05,15z Feel free to
Police each other in my absence.
Good Birding, Curt McDermott

RE: [nysbirds-l] POSSIBLE Thayer's Gull on Central Park Reservoir

2015-02-07 Thread Kai
Photos of the gull are here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/123166253@N05/sets/72157650700330615/

One of the photos shows the bird with wings outstretched, showing a
Thayer's-like wingtip pattern above (black on the outer webs of
primaries) and below (small amount of black visible around edges).
The other two photos show the bird sitting - one with a Herring Gull
in the foreground for comparison. The legs were a deep pink and the
head had a fair amount of streaking (although some of the Herring
Gulls present showed these characteristics as well). The rounded
head and relatively small-looking bill, combined with the pattern on
the wingtips, seem like the best reasons to call this a Thayer's.
Would be great to hear what others think.

Brian Whipple, Drew Haluska and I spent over an hour trying to
relocate the gull this afternoon, with no luck. This bird was seen
at the southwestern end of the reservoir, where a patch of open
water was drawing a lot of gulls closer to the edge of the reservoir
than they normally would be.

[nysbirds-l] Two Thick-billed Murres Montauk Pt

2015-02-07 Thread Shaibal Mitra
There were two Thick-billed Murres at Montauk Pt this afternoon. Andy Griswold
and a CT Audubon group found these birds from the bluffs at Camp Hero and
alerted us over at the restaurant.

One bird stayed close to the bluffs, just north of the parking area at Camp
Hero and just south of Turtle Cove. The other, which we never saw, had been
directly off the point, and apparently was later visible from the restaurant.

[nysbirds-l] East Shore ducks and gulls

2015-02-07 Thread Jay McGowan
We just got back from East Shore Park at the south end of Cayuga Lake where
the Aythya raft is showing well with many birds quite close to shore. Among
the throng of Redheads are lower numbers of Canvasback and both scaup, as
well as the continuing CANVASBACK x REDHEAD HYBRID, REDHEAD x SCAUP SP.
HYBRID, and leucistic Redhead. Two GLAUCOUS GULLS, the usual 3rd cycle and
a pale 1st cycle, arrived a little after 2:00 from the compost where we saw
them earlier, and a brown 1st cycle ICELAND GULL was also out on the lake
in the Redhead flock. Two adult Iceland Gulls were reported earlier in the
day and could easily have been present in the gull flock at the ice edge.

BEGIN TAPE

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, February 6th
2015 at 7pm. The highlights of today's tape are MEW GULL, GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, HARLEQUIN DUCK, EURASIAN WIGEON,
NORTHERN GOSHAWK, GLAUCOUS GULL, ICELAND GULL and LAPLAND LONGSPUR.

The immature MEW GULL continued its elusive and somewhat mysterious
presence in Brooklyn reappearing last Sunday afternoon around the playing
fields next to the Cesar's Bay shopping center after having gone unseen
since the previous Monday. It was also reported there Monday and Tuesday
afternoon including in the large parking lot at the shopping center where
many Ring-billed Gulls gather and are occasionally fed. Whether the
afternoon appearances are tide or time related has not been determined.
This site is off the Belt Parkway just west of exit 5. The ICELAND GULL
also continues there.

Also in Brooklyn the number of drake EURASIAN WIGEON at Bush Terminal Piers
Park climbed to two last Saturday with both also present Sunday. Single
GLAUCOUS and ICELAND GULLS were also still at that site Sunday. Another
ICELAND has been around Coney Island Creek in Brooklyn and a couple of
RED-NECKED GREBES continue along the Brooklyn / Queens shoreline. At Marine
Park in Brooklyn there was WILSON'S SNIPE and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER this
week.

The Fort Tilden sightings last Saturday included a RAZORBILL and 5 COMMON
REDPOLLS with 3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS there today with many HORNED LARKS and
SNOW BUNTINGS. Other REDPOLLS continue to be seen especially along the
south shore of Long Island with up to 20 at Jones Beach West End, Robert
Moses State Park with 8 PINE SISKINS and 30 at Smith Point County Park in
Shirley last weekend. Additional weekend REDPOLLS included 18 in Springs
and 11 at Orient State Park with one also continuing at the feeders in
Central Park.

On Staten Island an apparent immature female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, a bird
provoking some discussion as to its identification, has recently been on a
pond at Moravian Cemetery north of Richmond Road this area just east of
High Rock Park.

At Jones Beach West End an immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen a few times
last weekend cruising the various pine groves. This may or may not be the
same immature GOSHAWK also noted as far east as Tobay along Ocean Parkway.
Three HARLEQUIN DUCKS and some COMMON EIDER also continue at Jones Inlet.
The HARLEQUINS moving between the West End jetty and the jetties off Point
Lookout. Also at West End 5 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were present Saturday
together with many HORNED LARKS and SNOW BUNTINGS along the exposed grassy
areas in the median or at the Coast Guard Station field and other species
noted last weekend included AMERICAN PIPIT, PALM WARBLER, CHIPPING SPARROW
and FIELD SPARROWS. A GLAUCOUS GULL visited the Jones Beach field 10
fishing piers Sunday where 2 BOAT-TAILED GRACKLES were also present.

A dead LONG-EARED OWL along Ocean Parkway last Sunday indicates they are
around somewhere and 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were at Robert Moses State Park
Wednesday.

A check at Belmont Lake State Park Wednesday morning found the 4 GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, a CACKLING GOOSE and an immature ICELAND GULL but
there was no sign of the BARNACLE GOOSE.

The Hudson River is in good shape with numbers of BALD EAGLES now and many
are also being seen away from the river including one along with a
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK along Dune Road west of Shinnecock Inlet Wednesday. Other
recent sightings have featured a

BEGIN TAPE

He has photos, but we can't attach because they're on a point-and-click

We know weird Herring Gulls can look like Thayer's. We are NOT calling this
a Thayer's, but if anyone nearby has a scope and wants to come look, please

[nysbirds-l] Two Thick-billed Murres Montauk Pt

2015-02-07 Thread Shaibal Mitra
There were two Thick-billed Murres at Montauk Pt this afternoon. Andy Griswold
and a CT Audubon group found these birds from the bluffs at Camp Hero and
alerted us over at the restaurant.

One bird stayed close to the bluffs, just north of the parking area at Camp
Hero and just south of Turtle Cove. The other, which we never saw, had been
directly off the point, and apparently was later visible from the restaurant.
