We have had several in the last ten years try to winter in Region 5. At least one made it well into a normal wintry January and may have survived to the end. The Valley Stream SP bird may have shown up as part of a northbound movement, but can one be sure it didn't winter there? David

At the Hempstead Plains there was an osprey fishing the recharge basin next to the plains, it caught a goldfish and flew to a nearby light post to feed. I was looking at some Eastern Phoebes, and a nice looking American Kestrel caught my eye. He then proceeded to fly out of view. Other birds

I found the bird working its way north on the stream banks.  The bird is staying low.  I found it on the stream section near the intersection of Decker street and Rockaway parkway.  You can see the street signs from the stream.  There was a male and female pine warbler that seemed to be

The Louisiana Waterthrush found yesterday by Mike Scheibel continues in the creek running parallel to Waterside Ave at Fuchs Pond Preserve. Also of note is a flock of about 10 common redpolls feeding and calling in the trees for the second day in a row. An amusing combo of winter and spring.
