Knowing that I would be out in the Eastport/Riverhead area for non-birding reasons, I made sure to bring my scope in order to look for grasspipers on the sod fields as soon as my obligations were done. The Eastport fields (Eastport Manor Rd. and Rte 51) yielded only a few Killdeer combined, so

Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside 5 September Of interest this morning was a CLAPPER RAIL that flew onto the marsh edge and disappeared into the spartina. Just happened to be in the right place at the right time, The other Marsh denizen was an adult SALTMARSH SPARROW. This bird is unbanded
