Re: [nysbirds-l] RFI - Avon Lake, Amityville

2016-01-09 Thread Ben Cacace
Mike,

Here's the location of Avon Lake, Amityville on eBird's Hotspot Explorer:

http://ebird.org/ebird/hotspots?hs=L3265581=all=

If you wish to merge your personal location with an existing hotspot here
are the steps:

— Sign into eBird.org
— Go to "My eBird" & select "Manage My Locations" in the right panel
— At the bottom of the screen click "Show All" to see all locations on one
page
— You can sort the list by clicking on any of the headers: Location,
Country, State/Province, County, Type* or # of Checklists
— Select your personal location (it will show a letter "P" under Type*) by
clicking "Edit" on the right side of the line
— Select the "Merge" button and you'll see all nearby hotspots as red icons
— Keep the checkmark for "Delete after merging" selected
— Click the icon that best fits your location
— ... now you'll see the hotspot description above the 'Merge' button along
with the # of checklists you'll be merging
— Click on the 'Merge' button
— Answer Yes to the 'Yes or No' query

All checklists for that personal location will be combined with the hotspot
with this process.

[nysbirds-l] 27 Bald Eagles--Upper Delaware today

2016-01-09 Thread Andy Mason
Today's Delaware-Otsego Audubon Soc. annual field trip to view wintering
Bald Eagles in the upper Delaware River basin brought out over 50
participants who spotted 27 eagles along the East and West Branches of the
Delaware and Cannonsville Reservoir in Delaware County.

Waterways and the reservoir were nearly all open, leading to the birds being
more dispersed than usual. Other species sighted included Red-tailed Hawks,
Belted Kingfisher, Common and Hooded Mergansers, Buffleheads, Black Ducks,
Mallards and Canada Geese.

[nysbirds-l] Montauk Point 1/9/16

2016-01-09 Thread Tim Healy
After a successful wild goose chase in Smithtown, I continued to have a great
day out at Montauk Point. I crossed paths and teamed up with lots of birders
throughout the day, and almost everyone had a spread of excellent sightings to
share. My personal highlights included the stunning views of the continuing
drake King Eider between the lighthouse and Camp Hero, a young Glaucous Gull
along with adult and subadult Iceland Gulls at the inlet to Lake Montauk, a
Red-necked Grebe at Culloden Point, and several Virginia Rails at Big Reed
Pond. The biggest surprise was a flyby Black Guillemot heading east, again
between the lighthouse and the CH bluffs. It appeared a bit duskier than the
photos of the bird from January 1st, with more pepper than salt in the plumage
of its upperside. I only saw it briefly before losing it in the swells, but the
chunky body, low, buzzy flight, and white wing patches were distinctive. There
were plenty of the expected sea ducks and loons off the point. Other birds of
note included Razorbills, goldeneye, scaup, Bufflehead, both cormorants, Purple
Sandpiper, Snow Geese, harrier, and Sharp-shin.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Montauk Ash-throated Flycatcher - no

2016-01-09 Thread Christina Wilkinson
Yesterday and today, birders on the NYC Audubon winter weekend trip to Montauk
searched for the Ash-throated Flycatcher at Fort Hill Cemetery without success.
A groundskeeper who was familiar with the bird said he last saw it 4 days ago.

We did see a Peregrine Falcon fly over the cemetery this morning, however.
There also were thousands of sea ducks, mostly eiders, mergansers and scoters,
seen from the Camp Hero bluffs and 5 Long-tailed ducks at the seal haulout site.

[nysbirds-l] Linnaean Society of New York meeting 1/12

2016-01-09 Thread Anders Peltomaa
Hello all,
This coming Tuesday the Linnaean Society of New York presents its first
monthly meeting of 2016. Please join us in the Linder Theater on the first
floor of the American Museum of Natural History (enter at West 77thStreet
between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue).

6:00 pm – Micro-Parks as Migrant Traps, panel discussion

Linnaean Society Vice-President Andrew Rubenfeld will moderate a panel
discussion on the micro-parks of New York City. Bryant Park is a good case
in point: it is fairly small, sufficiently developed, and busy with
people—yet in the past few years of close observation it has attracted and
retained many unusual birds (from warblers and thrushes to woodcocks and
last spring’s Chuck-will’s-widow). These birds stay for a few days or
several weeks; some even overwinter. The enclosed canyon effect of the
tall, glass-covered buildings surrounding the park and the nighttime
illumination are certainly key factors. Presumably some birds range beyond
the park to feed but return there to roost. Does the lack of nearby
backyards contribute? Why do some of these pocket parks attract a variety
of migrants, and others do not? After the panel members’ discussion there
will be a question-and-answer period from the audience.

7:30 pm – 21st-Century Birding, Ned Brinkley

Editor of North American Birds, Ned Brinkley spends as much time pondering
the cultural changes in birding as the changes in the distribution of
birds. He writes: “Over the 20th century, film and television in the United
States almost invariably portrayed birders as marginal and eccentric. For
many decades such media strongly influenced the general public’s perception
of birders and went nearly unchallenged. As with other subcultures birders
began to stake claims to normative American “cool” culture. This shift in
self-definition was first reflected in the media in the 1990s. With the
limitless proliferation via social media in the 21st century, the process
by which birders perceive and promulgate themselves and their pastime as
mainstream has accelerated. Birding is seen now as intense, athletic, hip,
intelligent, exploratory, edgy, and fashionable.” Brinkley’s talk will
trace birding’s evolution from the era of mannish spinsters and knock-kneed
milquetoasts to the latter-day spectacle of selfie super-heroism.

good birding,

Anders Peltomaa

[nysbirds-l] Long Island Ross's Geese

2016-01-09 Thread Derek Rogers
Apologies as I don't mean to jam the list up about the Ross's Geese but there
is some confusion and I want to provide some helpful clarification. There are
currently two Ross's Geese on Long Island's South Shore on either side of the
Nassau/Suffolk border.

The first known Ross's Goose is the Avon Lake bird that spends its time with a
local Canada Goose flock in and around the area, south along Riverside Avenue
and Amityville Creek (Suffolk). This bird shows yellow staining along the
flanks and is apparent in all of the photographs I've seen (hidden though when
the bird is roosting in water).

The second Ross's is the bird I came across today at Berner Junior High School
in Massapequa (Nassau) while trying to find the above bird. This bird is clean
white, lacking the yellow stain as seen on the above mentioned individual. This
bird eventually flew to the southwest and is roosting on Unqua Lake in
Massapequa Park. A good set up if your looking to twitch County Ross's.

Best,
Derek Rogers

I am still viewing the Ross's in Massapequa at Berner Junior High School. I

LSNY Council member

Sayville

[nysbirds-l] Western Grebe Continues at Piermont Pier

2016-01-09 Thread Jesse Sargent
The Western Grebe is currently being observed on the south side of the
pier some distance out near some old pylons. Scope definitely preferred,
but identifiable looks are possible with binoculars. Good viewing spots are
near the boat house and from the cement pier.

Good Birding,
Jesse Sargent
