[nysbirds-l] I ask you...where is the justice ?

2016-11-05 Thread robert adamo
This afternoon at ~ 1545, circling over the Supreme Court Complex on
Griffing Ave in downtown Riverhead, were 26 Turkey Vultures slowly making
their way south to north...without even a lone "Black" tagging along !

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] NYS eBird Hotspots: State, Counties & Locations Updated (Nov/'16)

2016-11-05 Thread Ben Cacace
Thanks to @Team_eBird for their dedication to keeping eBird.org running
smoothly and for the group of New York State hotspot moderators for their
time reviewing shared location suggestions.

This relates to the wiki pages developed for accessing data on eBird.org
including additional links to birding resources at the county and location
levels.

Here are some *additional changes* made to the pages not listed below:
— The year of the earliest submission has been updated on the Bar Chart
tables for all counties and the NYS page. The earliest reports are from
late 1870's i.e. Statewide Bar Charts (1875 - 2016) by Season by Month.
— The links to the latest hotspot updates appear at the top of the NYS page
on the row labeled 'Shared Location Updates (21-Jun to 17-Oct-'16)'.
— The 'Top eBirders' links for all counties and the NYS page have been
expanded to *All Time, 2016, 2015, 2014*.

*Species totals* have been updated for all county pages. This includes the
total number of species with the equivalent color code highlighting the
county name based on the colors used on eBird's maps. The alphabetical list
of counties on the main page has been updated with total spp. #.

*Hotspot pages*: All location pages have been updated on the wiki. These
include 380 pages representing a total of 860 out of 5,275 hotspots
(16.3%). Updates involve # of species and color codings based on species #
along with updated 2016 periods for the bar chart tables displaying the
Month: Nov./2016 and the current two month period Oct. - Nov./2016 along
with the current year.

For the following counties there are *individual wiki pages* for the *Top
10 locations* at the top of the list of shared locations: Cayuga, Erie,
Monroe, Niagara, Orange, Oswego, Seneca, Tompkins, Kings (Brooklyn),
Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), Nassau and Suffolk Counties. For
Westchester County and New York (Borough of Manhattan) County all hotspots
have links to shared location pages.

*Bar Charts* (Species Lists): For all county and top 10 location pages
there are tables showing the months, seasons and several time frames for
the current year. Clicking any of these will bring up a complete list of
species and other taxa with bar charts representing abundance. To see a
list of species for *all* periods click on the name above the months i.e.
'New York State (475 spp.)' or 'Cortland County (244 spp.)'.

*Maps of sightings*: After bringing up a bar chart list you'll see a MAP
button to the right of each species. Clicking this will produce a map of
the latest sightings. Red icons show sightings within the past 30 days.
Click on the icons to see a list of who reported each species and click on
'Checklist' to view their submission. Click on 'Explore Rich Media' in the
right sidebar to view locations with photos, audio or video. These also
exist for any multi-location page combining the hotspots associated with
the location i.e. Durand-Eastman Park in Monroe County with its 16
locations.

*Tide Graphs* exist for New York County, Kings County (Brooklyn) and
Richmond County (Staten Island). There's a quick link to the tide graphs on
the "Go To >" line highlighted in blue for each location. If there are
multiple graphs on a page the left/right is generally north/south or
west/east. If you spot any issues please let me know off line.

Click '*Overview*' on any of the wiki pages to bring up a sortable list of
all species along with the latest checklists submitted and a list of the
Top eBirders.

Check out 'My Location Life List', 'My County Life List' and 'My State Life
List' links on their respective pages.

For each location page click on 'Google Map Directions' to bring up a
Google Map page. On Google Maps click 'Directions' then 'Transit' to plot a
public transportation route. By clicking 'More Options and Times' you can
refine your search. This also works with 'Driving' and 'Walking'.

[nysbirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler - Northport, Suffolk Co.

2016-11-05 Thread Taylor Sturm
Hello
Earlier today did I come across an Orange-crowned Warbler at Crab Meadow Beach
in Northport, Suffolk County. This bird was loosely associating with a
Nashville Warbler which is also a good bird to see in November!
I will tell you where these warblers were:
They were on the eastern most section of the southern side of the line of trees
and shrubs which border the south side of the parking lot; right by the
dilapidated bulkhead along the creek. This trail is accessible by going to the
gazebo at the southeast corner of the parking lot.
Photos of the OCWA are in my ebird checklist which also mentions some other
birds I observed (nothing to get too excited about).
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32380588
Ok good-bye have a good day and evening!

[nysbirds-l] Uncommon Migrants at Jones Beach

2016-11-05 Thread Timothy Healy
Brendan Fogarty and I began a sweep of Jones Beach at around 8 AM. This
lovely fall morning featured a good diversity of birds and decent activity
levels this late in the season. Purple Finches and Goldfinches were passing
overhead more or less constantly, and 3+ Pine Siskins were detected among
them. Migrant highlights of the day included a Vesper Sparrow along the
wooden fenceline between the inner and outer turnarounds, a calling Eastern
Bluebird along the northwestern edge of the median, and 2 low flyover
Eastern Meadowlarks. We found 3 Snow Buntings, our first of the season, at
the beach, and others reported Lapland Longspurs. Gannets were moving west
in numbers, with lines of birds visible from the median and turnaround! The
carcass of an apparent late Baltimore Oriole was discovered at the edge of
the dunes near the swale, with a calling-card pellet left beside it. A
Hairy Woodpecker vocalizing in the median was a surprising find as well.
Knots, plovers, and Dunlin were present at the sandbar, with many lingering
oystercatchers as well. There are still a number of Forster's Terns on the
bay side, and I heard a Royal call once from the direction of the inlet
before Brendan arrived. He also got a Pipit at the parking lot after
pulling up.

'Tis the season to begin owling, but please be respectful of the birds and
fellow birders while you enjoy the search. Brendan and I spent some time
carefully checking the pines in the area, but we found only impressionists
inexplicably tooting in the trees at the turnaround. I'll give them the
benefit of the doubt and assume they were attempting to lure in northern
passerines rather than elicit a response of some kind from a nocturnal
raptor, but hey: important PSA anyway!

P.S. Hempstead Lake was very quiet, and the Pink-footed Goose is still
putting on a show at Hendrickson Park

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] eBird.org: Recent Additions to County Checklists

2016-11-05 Thread Ben Cacace
When I work on the NYS eBird Hotspots wiki I'll compare the previous bar
chart list of species with the current one to pick up any new additions
and/or deletions. By going to each county's '*Overview*' page I can
determine the date the species was added for each county. Some are from
newly submitted checklists from several years ago.

For each county on the wiki click the '*Overview*' link on the 'Explore a
Location' line:

Yellow highlights species added for the first time this year.

*Herkimer County:*
Barnacle Goose (24-Oct-2016)

*Madison County:*
Hudsonian Godwit (26-Oct-2016)

*Rockland County:*
Lapland Longspur (27-Oct-2016)

*Westchester County:*
Virginia's Warbler (1-Nov-2016)
