Yesterday, late afternoon found me checking out the Baiting Hollow W.T.
Deer carcass, but it was not drawing any avian attention. I then stopped at
the Honda dealership to set up an appointment, and wound up watching a
single T.V. fly-over. This sighting motivated me to head toward the Roanoke

Just brushed up on id of juvenile crossbills and given the absence of any
wingbars nor streaking on the mantle and breast my reference in prior post of a
“possible juv” was likely a female.

Planned on running the trails again this morning with idea of checking for
Crossbills. Cut run short as bird activity was high. Goldfinch, pine siskens,
and Crossbills were present, vocal and active. along with chickadees
red-breasted nuthatches (3+) and a smattering of others. I ran into a fell
