This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of June 29, 2020 Highlights: ----------- LEAST BITTERN BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON COMMON GOLDENEYE RED-SHOULDERED HAWK PEREGRINE FALCON RED-SHOULDERED HAWK SANDHILL CRANE PIPING PLOVER COMMON TERN RED-HEADED WOODPECKER ACADIAN FLYCATCHER GRASSHOPPER SPARROW PARULA WARBLER CERULEAN WARBLER PROTHONOTARY WARBLER RED CROSSBILL Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 6/1: A rare for the area PRAIRIE WARBLER was found on the Seneca Trail near the Visitor’s Center. It has continued to be seen and heard through the 6th. 6/3: A LEAST BITTERN was found at the Guy Baldassarre Marsh. 6/4: A rare for the area PARULA WARBLER was found at Howland Island. Also found was a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER. Another rare for the area COMMON TERN was seen at VanDyne Marsh. Also seen was a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON. A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was again seen at the forested area of Armitage road. A LEAST BITTERN was found along the Wildlife Drive. 6/5: 7 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS and 2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen along the Wildlife Drive. Cayuga County ---------- 6/5: a family of 5 PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS were seen along the Seneca river west of Bonta Bridge Road. These are continuing birds and have been studied for some time. Onondaga County ------------ 6/2: A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen at Beaver Lake Nature Center west of Baldwinsville. 6/4: A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen flying south from Jamesville Ave. in Syracuse. It was carrying food and perhaps heading for a new nesting area. 6/5: 2 ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS were found at Whiskey Hollow nature Preserve. A CERULEAN WARBLER was heard singing on Farnham Road on the east side of Cross Lake. Oswego County ------------ 5/29: 2 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were found on Main Street in Richland. 5/30: 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen at Selkirk Shores State Park on Lake Ontario. 6/3: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was again seen at Sunset Bay Park on Lake Ontario. 6/4: A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen in Hastings. An ACADIAN FLYCATCHER was found on Searles Road south of Rt. 104 in Parish. It was heard again on the 5th. Madison County ------------ 6/3: 2 SANDHILL CRANES were seen on Ditchbank Road north of Canastota. 8 Cranes were seen on the 4th. 6/6: A PRAIRIE WARBLER was heard on Eden Hollow Road just north of Sanderson Road. Oneida County ------------ 5/30: 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen near Cleveland on Oneida Lake. 6/6: 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue at Verona Beach Statae Park on Oneida Lake. Herkimer County ------------ 5/30: A PEREGRINE FALCON was again seen in Little Falls. 6/3: 4 COMMON GOLDENEYES including 3 young were found on Silver Lake north of Eagle Bay in the Adirondacks.
