Hi Phil,
Sure is one!  Nice.  There was one in CT last year or the year before that
eventually died and is now in the Yale museum.  Hope this one survives better.
By the way this list is actually for the whole state, hence NYS birds, so
definitely the place to report this.  For some reason upstaters rarely report
to this list:-(

I'm wondering if I saw a Great White Heron.
I was on a non-birding visit (but with binoculars) to Marshlands Conservancy on
the day before hurricane/TS Henri when I saw a large white heron/egret that has
been troubling me.  Compared to the many Great Egrets that I saw today in NJ,
this bird remains anomalous, so:
Initially assumed to be Great Egret.  The bill appeared too massive, the upper
mandible somewhat dark, and the culmen somewhat straight.  The overall bill
color did not present as the intense yellow that I saw on all the Great Egrets
today.  The legs were blackish on the lower 1/4 (mud?) but definitely not black
for the remainder - more along the lines of olive but not yellow.  It flew from
the shore (where I had assumed it was just a Great Egret) to one of the
mid-channel platforms and it gave a call that reminded me of Great Blue, which
is why I actually looked at it again.  No plumes.  Lores appeared greenish but
this bird was viewed at range without a scope.
On the face of it, it has potential to be Great White Heron but I assumed I was
just going senile since I've only ever seen that in FL.  I may yet still be
nute, but this evening I noticed:https://ebird.org/checklist/S74368904from Oct
2020 (Cos Cob, CT), also one report from Nov, and also references an initial
report by James Muchmore in late Sept 2020.
Anyone birding the north shore of the L.I. sound might want to check Great
Egrets a little more carefully than usual.

[nysbirds-l] white-winged dove/cockatiel

2021-06-08 Thread Andrew Block
Had a funny experience today along the Taconic Parkway.  As I was nearing the
northbound exit 8 I saw just above car level and along the side of the road a
bird flying parallel to me that I at first thought was a white-winged dove.  It
had the swift flight of a dove and was about the right size, but as I neared it
and started to pass it It turned out to be a cockatiel!  Go figure.  It had the
ancestral plumage with the white wing patches which is what through me off.  So
if anyone in the Millwood area is missing a cockatiel, it was last seen flying
north at exit 8 of the parkway:-)

[nysbirds-l] Mine Torne Rd. still closed?

Does anyone know if Mine Torne Rd. at West Point is still closed to the public?
I assumed it was since I haven't seen mention of it since then many moons ago.

rarely left the road since there was so much to see along it, plus I always
wanted to avoid meeting up with military people.

[nysbirds-l] dark eyed white-eyed vireo in late May?

2021-05-27 Thread Andrew Block
Has anyone ever had a juvenile white-eyed vireo in late May?  I had a bird in
AZ that looked just like a white-eyed vireo but it's eye was dark.  I know the
juveniles have dark eyes, but I've always been puzzled that it was dark at that
time of year.  I would think they haven't even fledged at that time.  I thought
of maybe a Mexican species but there are none that look like the white-eyed and
have a dark eye.  Just wondering.

[nysbirds-l] Schoharie County Eagle Trail

2021-04-27 Thread Andrew Block
I just happened onto a site for the Schoharie County Eagle Trail today which
peaked my interest since I went to school in Cobleskill and I'm very familiar
with the area.  I had not heard of this trail, but it seems it's brand new,
opening this spring.  It starts at Cobleskill and continues east to Esperance
and Central Bridge and goes south to Franklinton Vlie and Gilboa.  There is a
map that shows where each spot is and the best way to view the eagles. I must
say kudos to the founder of the trail and all those involved.  A nice thing to
have in the county and NY.

flock of Pine Siskins there.  Both seen while watching the martin.

[nysbirds-l] Wallkill River NWR birds and lots of sushi

Also had many Spring Peepers, some Pickerel Frogs and several Kauffeld's
Leopard Frogs calling.    Along the west side of the trail there were literally
hundreds of carp struggling to breath and move up a very narrow channel like
salmon moving up stream.  They seemed to be stuck at a certain point and were
backed up and dying because the level of the water is so low.  I wonder if the
refuge is lowering the water level so low to kill off the carp.  In a few days
there is going to be a sushi bonanza for the predators like eagles when they
are all dead.  Saw a similar thing at Blackwater refuge in MD several years
ago.  The eagles were so happy.

[nysbirds-l] Possible Black Vulture breeding

2021-03-30 Thread Andrew Block
For anyone doing the Scarsdale area for the atlas, I may have a breeding pair
of Black Vultures there.  It's the same pair I always seen in the area of
Scarsdale Ford on Central Ave.  Will try to confirm soon.  Was wondering if
they were breeding around that area.

[nysbirds-l] Tundra Bean-Goose and Yellow-headed Blackbird in Saratoga - no

2021-03-20 Thread Andrew Block
Once again I headed up to Saratoga Lake to try for the goose and now the
blackbird as well.  Spent the whole day and found bunches of geese but the huge
numbers from monday are pretty much gone.  Lots were heading north.  As far as
I know only a white-fronted was found otherwise not much goose wise around.  I
eventually found a huge flock of grackles/redwings/cowbirds, but no sign of the
yellow-headed.  I was able to see most of the birds as they filtered across the
street closely so pretty sure it wasn't there.  Oh well at least I saw a lot of
nice waterfowl:-)

[nysbirds-l] Are the Croton redpolls still there?

Anyone know if the redpolls at Croton Pt. Park are still coming to the same
spot?  I thought maybe since the 7+ inches of snow may have moved them to
somewhere else I'd ask.  Didn't know if people were still putting out food for
them.

Since it is a mega-rarity I figured I could report it here even though it's in

2020-12-09 Thread Andrew Block
I apologize.  I meant County Rte. 62, not 16, on my report of last sunday.  The
Barnacle goose was seen at the beginning of 62 not 16 near its intersection
with 12 past the pond on the left in the fields.  Sorry:-(

[nysbirds-l] Croton Pt. warblers

2020-11-06 Thread Andrew Block
Spent a few hours at Croton Pt. Park in Croton late this afternoon.  Lots of
Yellow-rumped Warblers were around with one Palm Warbler and one late Blackpoll
Warbler.  Also had a noisy American Kestrel on top of the landfill.  Other than
that there were the usual birds.

[nysbirds-l] Siskins/redpolls and brant

2020-10-09 Thread Andrew Block
Had a large flock of siskins or redpolls fly off from a tree in my yard this am
in Yonkers.  they called a little but not the typical siskin call so not 100%
sure which they were.  Looking to be a big finch winter.  Also, while fishing
in Verplanck I had five flocks of brant going south low over the river at about
10 minute intervals.  Wonder if they were fresh from Canada:-)  Both firsts of
the season for me.

[nysbirds-l] Echo Kyack Launch lot Croton Train Station not free anymore:-(

2020-09-23 Thread Andrew Block
I haven't seen this posted, but today I saw that starting July this year the
lot at the Echo Boat Launch site is no longer open the the public for free.
Another snobby town taking away free public parking from us, surprise surprise.
If you are a resident you can park for free with a permit but otherwise need
to pay at the pay station in the commuter lot at the Croton station.  I guess I
won't be going there much anymore.

[nysbirds-l] Ashoken Reservoir White Pelican and Brown Booby

2020-08-30 Thread Andrew Block
Went to look today for the White Pelican at the Ashoken Reservoir that was
reported on ebird but never here hoping to get it and boy were we in luck
today.  Finally got it around 1:30pm on a sandbar point directly across from
Woodstock Dike viewed from Dike Rd.  Went to view it on the dike and of course
some people had just scared it somewhere west.  At least we saw it.  But the
best thing seen was yet to come.  After the original search along the path on
the west half of the reservoir we decided to come back and check again.  Low
and behold at around 12:30pm on the little yellow boat anchored off the west
side of Reservoir Rd. which had only cormorants on it earlier in the morning
there was an adult Brown Booby  in amongst the cormorants  We couldn't
believe our eyes.  Never thought I'd find one of those myself in NY.  The
location is viewed from Reservoir Rd. looking west just before you get to the
little island that the bridge goes over.  Just look for a little yellowish
moored boat with cormorants on it.  Quite a fabulous day.

[nysbirds-l] Fw: INteresting Myiarchus flycatcher just over the border in MA

2020-08-21 Thread Andrew Block
I know it's extralimital, but today while at Bartholomew's Cobble in Ashley
Falls, MA, I had a Myiarchus flycatcher across from the parking lot along the
trail just past the big elm before the trail goes up hill into the woods.  It
seemed to be a little smaller than a Great Crested Flycatcher and had a lighter
gray breast and throat.  The belly was a very pale, almost gray-yellowish, but
more on the gray side not nearly as yellow as Great Crested or Brown-crested.
It was more like Ash-throated's color but even less yellow and the bird seemed
larger than a Ash-throated too.  Has anyone ever seen a Great Crested like
this?  I suppose it could be just molting or something but don't know.
Unfortunately some people came by and flushed it so couldn't get a photo.  My
two buddies were with me and agreed it looked weird for a Great Crested.  Any
help would be appreciated:-)

[nysbirds-l] extralimital Western Meadowlark at Mill Creek Marsh Park, Secaucus, NJ

2020-07-26 Thread Andrew Block
By the way this park is not open until 7am even though it's supposed to be open
by sunrise.  I got there at 5:45am and had to wait til that time before the
gate was unlocked.  I found the probable Western Meadowlark loosely hanging out
with a flock of starlings, Red-winged Blackbirds and an oriole at the
previously reported area by the U turn in the trail.  It flew up from the path
and over west to a patch of low trees where I was able to get some looks and
photos though nothing great.  It then flew back east towards the U turn when a
couple spooked it.  I lost it when it left my sight but seemed to go in
somewhere in that area.  Having seen the Western this spring in CT I would say
it most likely was a Western, but I can't say 100%.  I will leave the final
decision to people with better photos of it.  Good luck if you go.  Get there
early.

[nysbirds-l] Verplanck Snow Goose

While out fishing in Verplanck today I saw an adult Snow Goose with the usual
Canadas and Mallards that hang out at the Steamboat Waterfront Park at the end

adult has a busted wing so pretty obvious why it's around.  Still interesting

[nysbirds-l] Screech-Owl family in Briarcliff Manor

My buddy who lives on Macy Rd. in Briarcliff Manor just told me that while
sitting out on his deck the other evening a family of small owls came into the
yard and perched on the various fence posts in his back yard and periodically
went down to grab something.  Sounded like it could only be a family of four
Eastern Screech-Owls.  Pretty awesome sighting.

[nysbirds-l] Liberty Loop Trail, Wallkill River NWR confirmed breeders including cranes in NJ

2020-05-25 Thread Andrew Block
Hi all,
Spent from 5pm to 9:30pm looking for rails and trying to see what the cranes
were up to.  No luck on the Soras or Kings (if they are still breeding here),
but did have a Virginia briefly call during the day.  I wonder if the rails
there start calling at 10pm like they do in CT?  I wonder because I certainly
didn't hear them before I left.  The cranes do seem to be on a nest since I saw
the female acting as though she was on one but it was hard to see the nest
behind the plants.  She was acting like she was turning eggs and then she sat
down.  The male was by himself about 300-400ft away.  I guess that would be
confirmed breeding then.  I observed the male for most of the afternoon and
evening and he never ventured near the nest site nor did the female come off
the nest site.  Interesting.
Also seen as confirmed even though just south in NJ were two families of
Mallards, two Canada Geese families, two Pied-billed Grebe families and two
Wood Duck families.  Many pairs of Common Gallinules were also seen as well as
a Least Bittern.  After dark I had a Big Brown Bat and Hoary Bat (a new species
for me).

[nysbirds-l] Probable breeding Sandhill Cranes

2020-05-16 Thread Andrew Block
I was at Liberty Loop Trail at Wallkill River NWR yesterday and had the
resident pair of Sandhill Cranes close by the northern part of the trail near
the lot.  Supposedly they had chicks but is did not see any and they did not
act like they had any so I guess it's probable breeding since they tried last
year in the same place?  Who knows they might try again.

Just a reminder that the current atlas is different than the prior two. While

count - and I hope someone will!

[nysbirds-l] 3 wren day in Cold Spring!

2020-02-21 Thread Andrew Block
Went to the West Pt. Foundry Preserve today in Cold Spring and had 4 Carolina
Wrens, a Winter Wren, and a House Wren.  This is by far the latest/earliest
I've ever had a House Wren in NY, let alone the northeast.  Never had a 3 wren
day in winter.  Very cool.  Also had two Eastern Bluebirds, an imm. Bald Eagle,
6 Common Mergansers, and a Belted Kingfisher.

Drove by the FDR Park in Yorktown Heights today and noticed the resident pair

Went to look for the Grasshopper Sparrow at Playland Lake in Rye this am and

tables and in between them behind the sign for picnic area #4.  Barely even
needed binoculars to look at it.  Great photo ops.  Adorable bird.

[nysbirds-l] Rose-breasted Grosbeak in Mamaroneck

2019-12-20 Thread Andrew Block
I went to look for the Rose-breasted Grosbeak at the private residence in
Mamaroneck after looking for the chat at Marshlands which I missed.  As soon as
I got there the birds at the feeders flushed up onto the fence and the grosbeak
was there for a minute before diving into the shrubs and out of site.  It
should hang around til sunday for the count I'd think.  Hopefully they'll get
it.

[nysbirds-l] King Eider, Gr. White-fronted Goose, no Emperor Goose or Rose-breasted Grosbeak

2019-12-15 Thread Andrew Block
Went out today looking for these species and had some good luck.  The female
King Eider at Sterling Forest S.P. in Tuxedo is still there showing nicely at
the south end of the lake, but better to bring scope if it's not in close.
It's viewed from the road to the slightly to the left after turning onto the
entrance road to the headquarters from Long Meadow Rd.  People are not allowed
to drive down this private road as it is marked, but you can park at the
beginning on the left where the pull out is.  Then walk along the road til you
get to the first opening by the lake on the right and you're there.  It was
seen about half way out in the water.
I also went to look for the Greater White-fronted Goose in Rye Brook and found
it at the usual spot south of Bowman Ave.  The Emperor Goose I seem to keep
missing.  I checked The Tarrytown Reservoirs, White PLains H.S., and the golf
course east of Hathaway Lane in White Plains with no success.  I'm starting to
think it's a ghost.   I did have two juvenile eagles, many Common Mergansers,
and Buffleheads among others on the lakes at the different spots besides all
the geese.
Lastly I was alerted to a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak at a private residence in
Mamaroneck that was around for 4 days until 2 days ago.  Evidentily it's hasn't
shown for the last two days.  Oh well.

[nysbirds-l] Greater White-fronted & Emperor Goose in s. Westchester

2019-12-07 Thread Andrew Block
The Greater White-fronted Goose that was at the pond south of Bowman Ave. in
Rye Brook last winter is back with the Canada Goose flock.  One of the Canada
Geese has an all black head.  The previously reported Emperor Goose in White
Plains at the abandoned golf course off Hathaway Lane was not there today even
though a large flock of Canada Geese was there.  On the pond were many
Mallards, some Buffleheads, American Black Ducks, some Hooded Mergansers.
