My friend still has a couple siskins at her feeders in Scarsdale. I assume
they'll be heading north soon, but who knows they might stay to nest. It does
happen in these irruption years.

Sora confirmed in dense planting's south of SE corner of Bryant Park lawn (rail
w short yellow bill). Very skulky. Briefly seen in amongst ferns adjacent to
taller white-flowering shrub. Best chance for view appears to be from south
side path looking north through rail (heh heh) posts. Will take patience...

Sunday, 4 December, 2016 -
City Hall Park, lower Manhattan, New York City

Western Tanager continues at above park this morning - as do at least some of
other most-recent species seen in the area such as a Yellow-breasted Chat, most
regular in the Trinity Church cemetery, just down Broadway a few short blocks,
on west side of that avenue. The "Chat #2" from near or in City Hall Park has
not been seen yet by me this day, but a search will commence. Tanager seen &
heard calling in the vicinity of the 'usual' areas, which is nearer the eastern
faces of the 2 big buildings IN the park, & not far west of a prominent orange
"detour" sign on the main east-west cross-path that is the path to be on for
tanager-seekers.

City Hall Park is located south of Chambers Street, lower Manhattan - to the
east of Broadway - it is also at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, & a few yards
from the main pedestrian path to that bridge. The area the Tanager seems to be
favoring is between the 2 major buildings IN the park, on / near an east-west
path, be looking-up and listen for the distinctive call.s from the tanager.

Other interesting birds may be in the general area too! Observers continued in
numbers (as of 12/3) to see & seek the City Hall (and vicinity) birds.

good birding,

Tom Fiore,
Manhattan

Hello all,

Because I am the primary author on the most recent genetic analysis of
these species (mentioned in the post by Douglas Futuyma cited by Peter
Post), I thought that I could add a little to this discussion. I
recently finished my dissertation research, most of which focused on
these two species. While it is true that the two species are admixed in
their DNA over a large part of the West, the Pacific-slope populations
west of the crest of the Sierra, Cascades, and Coast Ranges (i.e., the
Pacific Slope) remain genetically and phenotypically distinct. We know
that gene flow from interior populations to the west slope Pacific-slope
populations occurs to some extent, but it does not result in widespread
genetic mixing like it does on the east slope. So, it is a little more
complicated than two species just merging (back) into one. Pacific-slope
seems to be merging more into Cordilleran than Cordilleran is merging
into Pacific-slope. I’m not sure taxonomists will take this nuance !
into consideration when deciding what to do with these species, but
from an evolutionary perspective, it is interesting. I will have at
least a couple of more papers on this out soon.

As soon as you cross the crest of the Pacific Slope to the east side,
you encounter mostly genetically intermediate birds with intermediate
songs or calls. There is some proportion of admixed birds in populations
all the way to the Black Hills and to northern Utah and Colorado. On the
other hand, you almost never encounter birds with intermediate songs or
calls on the west side and almost no birds are mixed in their DNA…and
these are limited to areas like Mt. Shasta in California, which is very
close to admixed populations.

So, if you have seen a Cordilleran Flycatcher in southern Colorado, New
Mexico, or Arizona, you are probably safe…in terms of listing. If your
Cordilleran Flycatcher is from Alberta, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, or the
eastern parts of the coastal states, you have a higher likelihood of
having seen an admixed bird.

One last thing in terms of identifying these species. I have not
formally analyzed the position notes yet (i.e., ‘pee-o-weet’ and
‘weet-seet’) but it seems that these change in a slightly different way
than the songs geographically. I.e., you can encounter birds whose
position note is more purely Cordilleran that has a more intermediate
song type and a more intermediate genotype.

I hope this is interesting to some of you.

The Painted Bunting is likely to stick around this weekend, the weather looks
to be ideal and so, coupled with the extensive news coverage over the last few
days, we are likely to see a sizable crowd over the next few days as people may
be making long treks to catch a sighting of 3PB (Prospect Park Painted Bunting).

We all ask you to please be mindfull of the planted areas when visiting the
bird and, as responsible members of the birding community, please politely
encourage others to do so as well. The Horticultural Supervisor yesterday
moved everyone off even the wood chip area where people had been moving into
for closer looks. John Jordan, Director of Landscape Management for the PP
Alliance, has asked us all to be extra mindful of the plantings up on this
wonderful green roof habitat and that, besides the plantings themselves, there
are some none too sturdy buried irrigation equipment that we risk damaging by
impacting these areas.

There are plenty of paved pathways offering good viewing vantage points and the
Painted Bunting has been very cooperative in that he doesn't seem to ever leave
the general area in, on and around the green roof on top of the Lefrak Skating
Center.

There are clean bathrooms, a snack bar and the Bluestone Cafe for your
convenience right there at the Lefrak Center to make your trip enjoyable when
you come to enjoy this magnificent little adventurer as well as the rest of
Prospect Park. We have bird feeders set up a short distance away on Breeze
Hill that are starting to attract some bird activity and please feel free to
enjoy the rest of our wonderful urban forest on your visit.

A nice way of saying thanks to the bird and the park would be to become a
member of the Prospect Park Alliance if you feel so inclined. Membership dues
contribute to the maintenance of this heavily traffic urban habitat.

https://www.prospectpark.org/get-involved/join-the-alliance/become-member/

Lefrak Center is best accessed through the entrance at Parkside and Ocean
Avenues. There is street parking in the area and the Q subway stops right
there (Parkside stop.)

I'm looking at a very cooperative Connecticut Warbler in Green-Wood Cemetery.
Actually using a headstone as a blind helps. I just tweeted a video. Anyway,
the bird is in a small shaded dell between Southwood and Vernal Aves., just
passed the new mausoleums. It is foraging in the grass beneath a stand of yew
trees.

Good birding,

A quick check of the fields to the west of the the intersection of Rt 105 and
Northville Turnpike in Riverhead this afternoon yielded 11 Buff-breasted
Sandpiper, 2 American Golden Plover, 1 Bairds Sandpiper and a handful of
Killdeer which were calling consistently, but out of view.

None of these birds were visible from the shoulder of either of the above
mentioned roads, but were only visible by walking to the back corner of the
Fireman's Training Facility parking lot and scoping to the SW and W from there.
The driveway for this spot is just before the intersection with Rt 105 if you
are heading north on Northville Turnpike (on your left).

Views were not as close as have been recently reported, but enjoyable none the

kept its distance from the road, but it was not outrageously far when seen

Common Redpolls seen this morning in the birch trees just below the turnoff -

A birthday walk in Croton Point Park before the snow today revealed a dearth of
Bald Eagles. We had 9 sightings of eagles, mostly distant. (Only 9! I know,
we're getting spoiled.) A male Norther Harrier was bouncing over the hill. A
Merlin nicely perched near the Point. A single Red-tailed hawk. No Common
Redpoll. Cold and bitter with the damp wind, with ice everywhere except around
the Point itself. I was expecting to see some eagles on the train ride up the
Croton-Harmon and then back to NYC, but only one each way.

A good day for a flask of whisky, for reinforcements.

[~BEGIN RBA TAPE~]
Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, December
5, at 6:00 pm.

The highlights of today’s tape are COMMON GROUND-DOVE, CASSIN’S
KINGBIRD, LE CONTE’S SPARROW, BLACK-HEADED GULL, BARNACLE GOOSE, SNOWY
OWL, HARLEQUIN DUCK, KING EIDER and more.

Despite the weather both the COMMON GROUND-DOVE and the CASSIN’S
KINGBIRD have continued in our area, but if you haven’t seen them,
don’t put it off much longer. The Ground-Dove at Jones Beach West End
has become quite elusive, but continues to occasionally be seen around
the NE corner of parking field 2 through Thursday. It was spotted
Sunday near the West End turnaround as well, so it continues to move
about that area, sometimes with accompanying MOURNING DOVES, but does
seem to return periodically to the NE section of Lot 2.

The CASSIN’S KINGBIRD at Floyd Bennett Field was still present today.
It has been seen most consistently around the picnic area south of the
Community Garden but also occasionally frequents the Garden itself.
Once it wanders off it becomes very difficult to find, so the best
strategy seems to be to wait around the picnic area, keeping an eye
also on the many perches in the Community Garden, which is off
Aviation Boulevard.

It almost seemed like déjà-vu all over again, but with changes in
species and location. Back on Sunday, November 23rd a richly colored
HENSLOW’S SPARROW was found at Riis Park and was enjoyed by many as it
ran through grasses there through Monday. Then last Sunday at Floyd
Bennett Field a beautiful LE CONTE’S SPARROW was expertly uncovered as
it too ran through low vegetation, also staying to Monday to the
delight of many. Can’t wait to see what will show up this Sunday,

Other birds around Floyd Bennett Field this week featured 3 BLACK
VULTURES overhead last Friday, LONG-EARED OWL, and 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS
last Friday, with one Saturday.

At Jones Beach West End, 2 HARLEQUIN DUCKS around Jones Inlet are most
frequently seen on the Point Lookout side along the jetties, where a
decent flock of COMMON EIDER also remained. The MARBLED GODWIT is
still visiting the bar off the Coast Guard Station at high tide with
AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS. A SNOWY OWL flying along the West End dunes
last Saturday landed near enough to an AMERICAN BITTERN to cause the
Bittern to relocate elsewhere, and also on Saturday three LAPLAND
LONGSPURS were with SNOW BUNTINGS and HORNED LARKS in the swale off
the Field 2 Pavilion.

In Westchester County an immature BLACK-HEADED GULL was found on
Friday the 28th at Premium Mill Pond in Larchmont. It was relocated
on Sunday, spending most of its time at adjacent Five Islands Park in
New Rochelle, where it was still being seen today. The park entrance
is off Route 1 on Le Fevres Lane, and the bird is usually with
RING-BILLED GULLS feeding around the edge of the pond, especially on
the east side. If not there, also check Premium Mill Pond to the east
from Pryer Manor Road.

A BARNACLE GOOSE was seen on Miller’s Pond in Smithtown late last
Saturday morning but not since. Scattered CACKLING GEESE included 6
on the fields and golf course at Van Cortland Park last Sunday.

Off Montauk Point last Sunday were a female KING EIDER with many
COMMON EIDER and 4 RAZORBILLS.

Recent EURASIAN WIGEONS have been at Jamaica Bay’s East Pond, Bush
Terminal Piers Park in Brooklyn, Grant Park in

If anyone nearby, is thinking of trying for this Connecticut Warbler, I suggest
you do it.

This is a very cooperative bird that is working a small area about 30 yards
from the entrance to Strack Pond this is on the side from the bandshell parking
lot.

This bird was the highlight of a 14 warbler day all seen in a small area near
the pond. It is still being seen as of a few minutes ago.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Second hand report that the Thick-billed Murre in Brooklyn continues...

Has anyone seen the Thick-billed Murre recently?

Brooklyn continues...

I just received a message from Bobby Kurtz, indicating that he got a call from
Ed Vescher (sp) who reported that he was looking at a THICK-BILLED MURRE from
Dead Horse Bay. It would seem that the bird has made its way back to the area
where it was originally found?

I don't know if the parking situation has changed at Floyd Bennett Field, but I
have included Doug Gochfeld's e-mail from Sunday (see the thread below), which
provided instructions on where one might park (I think it is about a 1/2 a mile
walk from the aviator parking spot).

Good luck if you go and please forgive me if I did not get all the details
right. I figured to get the word out ASAP for those who have yet to see this
bird.

Rob Jett just called to report that he and Heydi Lopes have just found a

It is behind the usual massive flock of Greater Scaup (which includes at least
one Canvasback that they just found).

>From his description, it sounds like the Murre is roughly here:
40.582019,-73.90224

Viewed from here:
40.581579,-73.896339

If coming by car, you must park at Aviator Sports Parking Lot (across Flatbush
Avenue, in Floyd Bennett Field), and walk south. I suppose that alternatively
you could park in the Brooklyn Golf Driving Range, but it is not much closer
and is technically private (I think).
The entrance to the Aviator Lot is here (at a traffic light):
40.590335,-73.900652

Walk down the street to the access of the trails (a bus stop is also here) here:
40.581571,-73.891704

Plugging these coordinates into Google Maps will yield a green arrow marking
the locations.

Good Birding
