[nysbirds-l] LeConte’s Sparrow - Staten Island

2020-10-26 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
The LeConte’s Sparrow continues at Conference House Park at the southern tip of
Staten Island. Seen well by four observers when the bird perched for a few
minutes in a small tree.

The bird is in a small field just off the beach near a red metal pole and a
garbage can. I entered the park from Massachusetts Ave and walked south on a
paved road and turned right after a few hundred yards.

[nysbirds-l] Kentucky Warbler - Alley Pond Park, Queens - details

The Kentucky is still being heard singing from the east-west trail just north
of Decodon Pond near the tree with the large burl. Of course the bird moves
around the area but has almost entirely been on the north side of the path. It
was fairly cooperative for this species when I was in park earlier. Many other
migrants in this part of the park including Worm-eating, Blue-winged, Prairie,
Magnolia warblers, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Baltimore Oriole, Great-crested
Flycatcher and more.

[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond Park, Queens

2014-09-14 Thread Jeffrey Ritter

There was an uptick in the numbers and variety at Alley Pond this morning.
Highlights inluded two, possibly three PHILADELPIHA VIREOS, BLUE-HEADED VIREO,
a likely YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER. Warblers included TENNESSEE, BLACKPOLL and
BLACKBURNIAN and others.

The Phillies were in the trees along the field edge north of the handball
courts where they appear almost every Septmber.

[nysbirds-l] Western Grebe - Sea Cliff, L.I.

2014-01-01 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
I stopped at Sea Cliff about 1PM today to check for the previously reported
Black Guillemot at the intersection of Cliffway and the Blvd. I did not see the
Guillemot but instead a large grebe caught my eye. In my bins in back light I
was thinking it was a Red-necked Grebe. When I got my scope on it I realized
the bird was a WESTERN GREBE. I took a few poor digi-scoped pictures before the
bird took off and flew northwest towards Sands Point. I had distant scope views
of it across the bay but I lost track of the bird and couldn't relocate it. Sea
Cliff and the beach at Sands Point might both be worth checking for this bird
in the coming days.

Happy New Year to all!

[nysbirds-l] Common Linnet - Kissena Park

2013-11-15 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
I am providing a link to photos of the Common Linnet that I took on Sunday,
Nov. 10 in the Kissena Corridor in Queens. This bird was first sighted by Seth
Ausubel in October. I found it in a mixed flock of sparrows and finches.

[nysbirds-l] Barrows Goldeneye - Jamaica Bay W.R.

2013-01-13 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
I observed a drake BARROWS GOLDENEYE on a raft of approximately 100
COMMON GOLDENEYE on the West Pond at Jamaica Bay early this morning.

I was aware that a BARROWS was around Jamaica Bay again this winter
since the Brooklyn Christmas Count when it was spotted by Doug Gochfeld.

I arrived at the breach along the south dike about 7:10 in the half
light. Although some Goldeneye were already in the air when I

I arrived at the breach along the south dike about 7:10 in the half
light. Although some Goldeneye were already in the air when I
arrived, the BARROWS stayed put until about 7:30 affording me
repeated good scope views.

Good luck if you go!

[nysbirds-l] Huntington Harbor Tufted Duck & Kissena Park

2012-12-24 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
The TUFTED DUCK swam out from the docks where it has been spending
recent nights around 7AM this morning. I first viewed the bird
through the chain link fence at the north end of the town parking
area. The bird remained in good view in the harbor for approximately
20 minutes before disappearing behind a docked boat.

Later, back in Queens, I stopped at Kissena Corridor and was able to
find both the previously reported INDIGO BUNTING and ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER.

[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond Park Virginia's Warbler update

2012-11-06 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
Just some more detail on Eric Miller's sighting of the Virginia's Warbler
yesterday. At about 3:15 yesterday afternoon, Eric and I heard three soft chip
notes low in the understory near a tangle of downed tree limbs at the spot
Steve Walter describes below.

The chip notes sounded promising and we began to search the area. Eric saw the
bird a minute or so later when it turned over a leaf on the forest floor. He
got a good look of its upper body from approximately 25 feet away. As he
related to me later, the bird has a gray back and a whitish breast with yellow
spot on the upper breast. The most notable field mark is a bold eye ring.
Unfortunately, I did not see the bird. My view may have been blocked by the
understory plants and the bird was not moving. When Eric let down his bins to
better describe where I should look, the bird disappeared.

This morning, as of 9:30 when I left the park, the bird had not been re-found
despite the efforts of a number of good birders. As Steve said in his post,
this is a very difficult bird to find. Hopefully, it will present itself again,
this time long enough for a photo to be obtained.

Eric Miller (aka the boy who cried wolf) called late today to say that he
re-found the Alley Pond Park Virginia's Warbler (aka needle in a haystack). I
quickly went to join him and Jeff Ritter, only to get the predictable result.
This is a tough bird. Today's sighting was a few hundred yards away. Enter the
park at 76th Avenue and Cloverdale Blvd., this time going left. Wind around the
stone wall on the left to a spot just past a stack of smaller tree limbs. Of
course, by tomorrow it could be somewhere else. It's worth a look in the
plantings along Cloverdale Blvd. (where you enter the park), as they did
attract a Parula later on.

[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond Park - Spring Migrant

2012-03-31 Thread Jeffrey Ritter

Despite the dreary weather, a few hours in Alley Pond Park in Queens
this afternoon produced a nice variety of birds. The hot spot was the
area around Turtle, Decadon and Lilly Pad Ponds. Most of the
following were observed in that area of the park:

Pine Warbler (numerous)
Eastern Phoebe (numerous)
Palm Warbler (1)
Hermit Thrush (1)
Brown Creeper (1)
Golden-crowned Kinglet (several)
Blue Gray Gnatcatcher
American Goldfinch (small flock)
Rusty Blackbird (1 or 2)
Field Sparrow (1)

I also stopped at the Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC) on
Northern Blvd to check for a Louisiana Waterthrush reported by Andrew
Baksh this afternoon. Although I observed this bird yesterday evening
after Eric Miller mentioned that he had found it at the pond a short
distance west of APEC, I was unable to find it again at 4:30 PM. The
bird may still be around though. I did see a second Palm Warbler at
the pond and two Kildeer at the APEC parking lot.

saw a fair amount of activity over a couple of hours before moving on
to Kissena. Highlights at Alley pond including BLUE-WINGED WARBLER,
BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, MARSH WREN and LINCOLN SPARROW.

Kissena Park, particularly the corridor west of Kissena Blvd., was
again a hot spot with highlights including BLUE GROSBEAK (2-3),
CONNECTICUT WARBLER, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and PHILADELPHIA VIREO. The
latter two species were seen in a brushy wooded area just north of
the artificial turf football field.

Karlo and Alison Mirth called to let me know that they found a LARK
SPARROW in the corridor area.

Also notable today were the large numbers of Savannah Sparrows,
Common Yellowthroats and Palm Warblers. Lots of Blue jays as well.
Others sparrows seen included FIELD and WHITE-CROWNED.

The following is a composite list for both parks with species seen
only in Alley Pond noted as AP.

seen last weekend)
Tennessee Warbler (1)
Nashville Warbler (several)

[nysbirds-l] Kissena Park, Queens - September 25

2011-09-26 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
This is a late follow-up on Donna Schulman's report from yesterday to
provide a more complete tally of the excellent birding at Kissena
Park yesterday. As good as Saturday's birding was, yesterday was
better. The numbers of flycatchers particularly Eastern Phoebes was
impressive.

A total of 19 species of warblers were seen yesterday including
Connecticut and Mourning, 22 species seen on Saturday and Sunday
combined. (A Worm-eating Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler and Golden-
winged Warbler found by Eric Miller earlier in the week makes for a
total to 24 warbler species for Kissena for the week.) Of the many
highlights this weekend, I found particularly rewarding the
opportunity to observe both immature Mourning and Connecticut
Warblers in close succession.

Most birders concentrated their efforts on the Kissena corridor in
the area east of the community gardens and west of the artificial
turf football field. This is a fairly open area interspersed with
trees which was replanted with tree saplings and a variety of other
plants by the NYC Parks Dept. last year.

In addition to the species listed below there was a "Budgie" parakeet
mixing with a flock of House Sparrows.

Birders present (that I am know of) included Eric Miller, Peter
Reisfeld, Donna Schulman, Coleen & Bob Veltri, Ian Resnick, Arie
Gilbert, Chuck Beilman, Lou Widerka, Mike Ritchie, Corey Finger,
Michael McBrien & father, Karlo & Alison Mirth and Seth Ausubel.

The following is a composite report of sightings.

CONNECTICUT WARBLER (2, 1 immature, likely the same individual seen
Saturday, and a second individual that others described as an adult)
MOURNING WARBLER (1 immature found by Eric Miller)
Tennessee Warbler (1)
Nashville Warbler (5+)
Yellow Warbler (1)
Magnolia Warbler (several)
Black-throated Green Warbler (1 or 2)
Black-throated Blue Warbler (1 seen by Eric Miller)
Black and White Warbler
Blackburnian Warbler (1)
Prairie Warbler (1)

Blackpoll Warbler (numerous)
American Redstart (numerous)
Wilson's Warbler (1)
Northern Parula
Ovenbird (1 seen by Peter Reisfeld)
Northern Waterthrush (1 or 2)
Common Yellowthroat (several)
Yellow-billed Cuckoo (1 adult, seen well by many)
Black-billed Cuckoo (1 immature, found by Eric Miller)
Empid. Flycatcher (numerous)
Eastern Wood Pewee (numerous)
Eastern Phoebe (many)
Blue-headed Vireo (1 or 2)
PHILADELPHIA VIREO (seen by Donna Schulman)
Red-eyed Vireo (1 or 2)
White-eyed Vireo (1 immature)
Ruby-crowned Kinglet (1)
Swainson's Thrush
Wood Thrush (1 seen by Eric Miller)
Veery (1 seen by Eric Miller)
Cedar Waxwing

[nysbirds-l] Warner Island, Shinecock Bay, L.I. - September 3

2011-09-05 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
On Saturday, September 3, I accompanied a friend on his small boat on
the east end of Shinecock Bay to do a bit of exploring. It was a
breezy day and the water was quite choppy. This made it difficult to
bird while the boat was in motion. We were able to land on Warner
Island which is a short distance east of the Ponquoge Bridge around
1-2 PM, just after high tide. Here the birding was rewarding. I
observed a variety of birds including SANDWICH TERN (2), ROYAL TERN
(6), COMMON TERN, MARBLED GOTWIT (2), SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER (2),
RUDDY TURNSTONE, AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER,
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER. Interesting that some
Sandwich Terns are still hanging around the area a week after Irene.

I also saw a SANDWICH TERN yesterday on the beach at Cape May, NJ,
this one also among a flock of ROYAL TERNS. For those not following
the NJ list, a Brown Booby continues near Cape May at Jarvis Bay. The
views from land were distant but clear and satisfying nonetheless. A
spotting scope is helpful.

[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond & Kissena Parks, Queens - CT Warbler and more

2010-09-26 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
After a slow start from 7AM to 9AM in Alley Pond this morning, the mid-morning
activity was good. Notable species included Winter Wren, Brown Creeper,
Red-breasted Nuthatch, Dark-eyed Junco, Cape May Warbler, Blue-headed Vireo and
another Philadelphia Vireo. Its been a great September for Philly V's at least
in Alley Pond. Also good numbers of both Kinglets. These birds seen with Eric
Miller, Bob and Coleen Veltri, and Howie.

Around noon, I tried the asphalt path that goes through the Long Island
Expressway/Cross Island Parkway interchange starting at Douglaston Parkway
(across from the shopping mall). I observed a Connecticut Warbler just north of
the northernmost ramp where the asphalt path turns left down into the east
Alley marsh. The bird appeared to be an immature. I got a brief but good look
at the bird at the top of the bushes on the left side of the path opposite a
fenced enclosure before it disappeared into the brush. I was unable to find the
bird again over the next half hour and when I returned a couple of hours later.

Birds observed this afternoon in Kissena Park with Eric Miller and Coleen
Veltri included Prairie Warbler and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond Park

2010-09-05 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
Eric Miller and I birded Alley Pond Park this morning and between us found
eighteen warbler and four vireo species. Eric had a brief look at a
Yellow-breasted Chat at the "Acadian" kettle hole while I got the first looks
in the early morning sun at Tennessee, Bay-breasted and Cape May Warblers in
the Devil's Walking Stick just north of Little Alley Pond.

There were not only warblers in the trees. A Great Blue Heron perched for a
couple of minutes above me in a tree on the path near Little Alley Pond.

A little later, Eric and I saw the immature Bay-breasted in the Devil's Walking
Stick and were able to get very good views this morning to confirm the i.d. In
addition Eric and I got great views of Cape May, Tennessee and Blackburnian.
Later, in another area of the park we got an excellent look at an immature
Blackpoll, nice to compare with the Bay-breasted.

A walk along the asphalt path on the east side of the park near the Cross
Island Parkway (and some sphishing) produced looks at two Canada Warblers, a
second male Cape May and a Philadelphia Vireo. The Philadelphia was a drab bird
without much yellow. The small bill, and tail and compact shape made the bird
made for a clear i.d.

Warbling Vireo and a single Yellow-throated Vireo were singing. Northern Parula
was easily the most abundant warbler species.

Did not get a chance to post yesterday, but many of the same species were
present. Yesterday, Eric also got on a Mourning Warbler which I also had a
brief unsatisfying look.

Here's the list of notable species:

Warblers:
Blackburnian
Cape May
Bay-breasted
Tennessee
Black-throated Blue
Black-throated Green
Ovenbird
Northern Parula
Chestnut-sided
American Redstart
Magnolia
Black and White
Nashville
Canada
Blackpoll
Common Yellowthroat
Northern Waterthrush
Yellow-breasted Chat

Vireos:
Red-eyed
Warbling
Yellow-throated
Philadelphia

Thrushes:
Wood
Veery

Herons:
Little Blue
Great Blue
Green

Others:
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Empid. Flycatcher (perhaps Least)
Eastern Wood Pewee

[nysbirds-l] Doodletown - Kentucky Warbler and more

2010-06-06 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
There was a Kentucky Warbler in Doodletown this morning. I found the bird a
hundred yards or so up Pleasant Valley Rd. from its start at the T intersection
with Doodletown Rd. I heard it singing as soon as I made the left turn onto
Pleasant Valley Rd. and saw it on both sides of the road. Around noon, I heard
it singing fairly deep into the brush on the east side of the road.

Other highlights included three Pileated Woodpeckers at Herbert Cemetery. I was
within a hundred feet of the three and had prolonged, unobstructed looks. They
seemed oblivious to my presence. There was a male and female and, I believe, a
juvenile.

There was also at one and perhaps two Worm-eating Warblers on Lemon Rd. up the
hill from the reservoir. I have had them many times further up on Pleasant
Valley Rd., but not in that area.

If you are unfamiliar with the place names that I've mentioned there are now
maps at various locations in Doodletown showing the locations of different
roads, house foundations, etc.

With the regular Doodletown breeders as well, I had a great morning of birding.

[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond Park - Mourning Warbler

2010-05-08 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
I got a good look at a singing Mourning Warbler early this morning. The bird
was just west of the Kaplan Trail near the junction with the Blue blazed trail
where it heads east to Lily Pad Pond. The Mourning was seen by others later in
the morning but was not heard or seen when a number of us checked for it at
mid-day.

Thanks to Ken Feustel for reporting this bird yesterday.

Other highlights in Alley this morning include Worm-eating and Hooded Warblers.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park - Ramble

2010-05-07 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
There weren't huge numbers this morning but a nice variety nonetheless.
As Morgan Tingley noted in an ebirdsnyc report a few minutes ago there
were at least five or so Blackburnian Warblers scattered around the
Ramble. Other highlights:

Bay-breasted Warbler (the Point)
Wilson's Warbler (the Point)
Cape May Warbler (singing in a large oak on Cherry Hill with brief
views)
White-crowned Sparrow (wood chip path at Strawberry Field)

[nysbirds-l] Staten Island Summer Tanager and other notable birds

2009-12-12 Thread Jeffrey Ritter
Eric Miller, Gary Straus and I travelled to Staten Island this morning to look
for the Summer Tanager and other birds reported in recent days.

We were weren't disappointed.

The Summer Tanager and Red-headed Woodpecker were both present again at Clove
Lakes Park. We found the Summer Tanager near the stream just north of the white
stone bridge, the second bridge north of Martling Ave. Other birds present in
the same area were 3-4 Baltimore Orioles, a Pine Warbler, an Orange-crowned
Warbler, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, both Red-breasted and White-breasted
Nutchatches and a Brown Creeper.

The Red-headed Woodpecker was in the trees between a clearing and the stream
just east of Brookside Ave. near the intersection with Kingsley Ave.

>From Clove Lakes we then proceeded to a private house near Wagner College
>where we observed the Rufous Hummingbird that has been present since late
>October.
