[nysbirds-l] KING RAIL at Timber Point golf course (Suffolk County)

2022-05-19 Thread John Gluth
This morning, just after 8:00am, I found a KING RAIL foraging on the course, on
either side of the road down to the east marina (40.7193010, -73.1428022). The
encounter only lasted a few minutes, and despite a few reasonably prompt texts,
nobody who arrived shortly thereafter had success refinding the bird. But I
just received word that the bird recently showed again, so anyone inclined to
try for it should get down to Timber Point ASAP. Good luck if you go.

[nysbirds-l] PACIFIC LOON at Bayard Cutting Arboretum (Suffolk County)

2022-02-19 Thread John Gluth
Early this afternoon (~1:15) I found a PACIFIC LOON on the Connetquot River off
Bayard Cutting Arboretum (a Red-throated Loon as well). Unfortunately it moved
fairly quickly downriver over the next few minutes and was soon out of sight. I
got word out ASAP via direct text and to Bird Finders via WhatsApp, but AFAIK
there were no conclusive sightings subsequently by other birders who arrived on
the scene.
The arboretum doesn’t open until 9:00am tomorrow, but there are multiple points
of access to the river farther south along Great River Road (3 small town
parks), and at Timber Point golf course. Good luck if you go.

[nysbirds-l] American White Pelican at Sans Souci Lakes (Suffolk) - YES

2020-01-25 Thread John Gluth
Still present this morning 7:15-7:20, visible from Montauk Highway.
Unfortunately it swam north through a gap in an old dam to the next pond in the
‘strand’ that make up the lake, where it could no longer be seen. I then tried
all vantage points accessible from the north, but it was still not visible.
Patience will probably be required to see this bird.

[nysbirds-l] TOWNSEND’S WARBLER! Nassau County.

2019-12-28 Thread John Gluth
Just covering the listserv base for anyone who hasn’t heard already about this
bird via other branches of the birding grapevine.
Late this afternoon I found a TOWNSEND’S WARBLER while participating in the the
Southern Nassau CBC. The bird was mostly favoring pines on the perimeter of the
northeast section of Philip B. Healey Beach, but eventually flew across
Florence Ave. and was last seen in a lone pine on the south side of the park
entrance (40.6519604, -73.4850004) as the sun set. The bird was very active but
could easily disappear from view for minutes at a time. Thankfully it was also
fairly vocal, it’s calls giving away it’s continued presence. The call note was
similar to that of Black-throated Green Warbler, but we’re higher pitched and
‘sharper’. Good luck if you go!

[nysbirds-l] Hudsonian and Marbled Godwits (Suffolk County)

2019-08-04 Thread John Gluth
The Hudsonian and Marbled Godwits reported by Ken and Sue Fuestel yesterday are
still present this morning, albeit on a more distant sandbar farther north
inside Old Inlet. Currently in the same scope view with a Caspian Tern. Also
several Red Knot.

WARNING: Smith Point Park is closed for a triathalon, requiring one to park in
the Shirley marina parking lot and wall across the bridge.

[nysbirds-l] Robert Moses SP (Suffolk) sea watch

2019-06-29 Thread John Gluth
A 75 minute (7:15-8:30) sea watch at Robert Moses State Park (from the dune
crossing closest to the golf course) produced a nice showing of 46 Wilson’s
Storm Petrels moving e-w, some fairly close to shore. Also seen was a single
Parasitic Jaeger that harassed a Least Tern into giving up its catch, which the
jaeger appeared to retrieve from the water. It then flew back back to the west.
No shearwaters were seen.

[nysbirds-l] Interesting raptor, Ulster County

2019-04-08 Thread John Gluth
While perusing the eBird Rarities photo gallery on my lunch break, I came
across two images of a raptor seen yesterday (4/7) in Ulster County:

https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S54719551

Identified by the observer as a Northern Goshawk, the bird is clearly not an
accipiter but a buteoine hawk. It does not appear to be one of the resident or
migrant species expected here in NY though. What is it then? I think the facial
pattern in particular makes immature Gray Hawk (GRHA) a possible candidate. But
I’d be really interested in what other birders with more knowledge of
neotropical buteos think as I have only limited field experience with that
group, although that includes encounters with immature GRHAs (TX 2003, AZ 2018).

https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S47684324

With the Maine Great Black Hawk still a fresh memory and Zone-tailed Hawk(s)
also seen in the northeast within the past few years, Gray Hawk is no longer an
outlandish thought. Whatever the Ulster bird is, it could still be somewhere in
the state, so keep your eyes to the skies.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Thick-billed Murre in Brooklyn Now

2019-01-18 Thread John Gluth
I’m seriously considering paying the $95 for a 10-hour codfish trip aboard the
Laura Lee Express out of Captree. Half the price of a See Life trip. Two trips
each weekend through the end of March. Much more convenient for Suffolk birders
than Brooklyn. If memory serves from past cod trips (before birding became my
passtime of choice), chum (clam chunks) is employed. It’s not fish oil, but
couldn’t hurt.

RE:[nysbirds-l] NNYBirds: Juvenile Brown Booby on Long Lake (Hamilton Co.)!

2018-08-27 Thread John Gluth
There were two different Brown Boobies on Long Island just last year: Nickerson
Beach (Nassau Co., June) and Lake Montauk (Suffolk Co., October) - neither
apparently storm related. As for inland records there was one on Cayuga Lake
just 2 years ago. Most relevantly though, there was an immature bird in
Berkshire County, MA just a week ago. Would be interesting to compare photos of
that bird and the Long Lake bird.

[nysbirds-l] Caspian Terns, Southaven County Park (Suffolk) - YES

2018-04-29 Thread John Gluth
The two Caspian Terns found by Chris Gangemi two days ago continue on the
Carmans River. They put on a great show late this afternoon between the boat
launch and lower part of the river, one bird catching a large fish which it
eventually managed to swallow after flying around with it for a couple minutes,
half the fish hanging out of its bill. There was a different kind of swallow
spectacle going on as well, with 5 species of swallow (Barn, Tree,
Rough-winged, Bank and Purple Martin, in order of abundance, high to low),
foraging their way up and downstream.

[nysbirds-l] 3 Bald Eagles on Connetquot River (Suffolk Co.)

2018-01-14 Thread John Gluth
This afternoon, while covering my territory for the NYSOA January Waterfowl
Count, I found 3 immature Bald Eagles perched in close proximity within the
closed Paradise Island natural area of Bayard Cutting Arboretum. My vantage
point was across the river (east side) at the intersection of Connetquot and
Chateau drives in Oakdale (40.7439116,-73.1476513). Distance (~300 yards) and
poor lighting made aging them impossible, but possibly siblings fledged from a
nearby nesting. Three Bald Eagles in one spot may not be a big deal elsewhere
in the state, but this is a first for me on Long Island in 24 years of birding,
so somewhat noteworthy.

P.S. The adult male Eurasian Wigeon was still present on Mill Pond in Sayville.

Perhaps a bit old school, and not a perfect solution, but the ABA has an online

It's not quite real time - there can be a varying degree of lag depending on
net traffic or server issues - and you don't get alerts (you have to remember
to check it), but doesn't seem to suffer the problem
of missing posts. BF's post re the solitaire appeared yesterday with a time

Re:[nysbirds-l] V. Rails released in Central Park, NYC (11/21 etc.)

2017-11-24 Thread John Gluth
One can't help but wonder whether there are better places than Central Park to
release a rehabbed marsh species like Virginia Rail. Someplace with a greater
amount of appropriate habitat, and more importantly on the perimeter of
Manhattan, providing a better escape route from the island than through the
canyons of high-rise buildings surrounding Central Park. Someplace like Inwood
Hill Park or Randall's Island perhaps. Are there any regulatory constraints on
the rehab facility mentioned which require them to release all their
outpatients into Central Park?

of a cat but which later succumbed to its injuries. This record does not appear
on eBird.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Pileated Woodpecker

2017-10-04 Thread John Gluth
FYI, the dead end of Mount Misery Road is completely on the other side of West
Hills County Park from Reservoir Road and Jayne's Hill (opposite sides of Sweet
Hollow Rd., which bisects the park). So, not a good idea to access the park
from Reservoir Rd. unless you want to go on a long hike as well as search for
the woodpecker.

[nysbirds-l] Riverhead grasspipers

2017-08-26 Thread John Gluth
Two Baird's and 3 Buff-breasted sandpipers have been coming and going from a
low, muddy patch in the harvested sod field on the east side of Doctor's Path,
at the intersection with Reeve's. Associating with ~40 Semipalmated Plovers.
All five are currently farther out in the field, just beyond the first strip of
grass that runs north-south, between 2 yellow tractors. No golden Plovers here
now or earlier on other sod fields in the area.

[nysbirds-l] BROWN PELICAN at Robert Moses SP (Suffolk County)

2017-07-29 Thread John Gluth
Pat Lindsay, Pete Morris and I just had a BROWN PELICAN fly past the concession

high, heading east to west. When last seen it was dropping a bit and angling
toward shore somewhere between Fire Island to Cedar Beach. If birding along the
south shore today it might pay to keep your eyes open for it.

[nysbirds-l] YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER at Bayard Cutting Arboretum -YES

One singing male, heard and seen within 100 yards east of the parking lot.
Ranged around a fair amount, at one point flying west to the other side of the

(Sycamore, Red Oak, E. White Pine, Douglas Fir), so poor views. Has gone silent

[nysbirds-l] Oak Beach (Suffolk Co.): Eared Grebe and Barrow's Goldeneye - YES

2017-02-26 Thread John Gluth
Saw the continuing female Barrow's Goldeneye this morning from the small
parking toward the western end of Oak Beach Road. Later, in a quest for a
closer look at the bird with better lighting, I went to Overlook Beach and
hiked east to the Sore Thumb (Fire Island inlet). The views of the Barrow's
were not significantly closer from this vantage point, but the angle of light
was much better - the bird's all orange-yellow bill really shone. But what
really made the 2.5 mile round trip hike worth it was refinding the EARED GREBE
found last weekend but apparently not seen since then (2/19). It was tucked
into the NW corner of the cove, close to the private docks there, and likely
wouldn't be detectable from the Oak Beach parking lot mentioned earlier.
Excellent views were enjoyed from as close as 25 yards.
