[nysbirds-l] Tentatively identified as Gray-breasted Martin - Prospect Park

2021-04-03 Thread Rob Bate
Doug Gochfeld and some others are now tentatively calling the Prospect Park
Lake Martin a Gray-breasted Martin, a species found in South and Central
Americas. eBird hasn't any sightings in the US listed for this species
even in southernmost Texas.

The Q train stop at Parkside is the closest station to the east side of the
lake where the bird has been seen a lot in the last day or so. It also has
been over on the west side of the lake where the F train to Ft Hamilton
Parkway exit gets you a few blocks away. Parking shouldn't be too
prohibitive if you are driving in. Look for the cameras and scopes if you
go and let's hope it sticks overnight for those who'd love to see this
ultra rarity. I know NYSARC (NYState Area Records Committee) must be
having a joyous time pouring over photos and recordings.

Sorry- auto correct, no reading glasses and 20 mph winds - I meant Loons, both

Also, the 30+ Razorbills turned out to be at least 120, maybe more. The frenzy
did abate but there were still a few, at least by the jetty. One White-winged
Scoter in the bay side gave us a scorer sweep. 20 Common Eider by the jetty.

[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn - Summer Tanager Blue Grosbeak

2018-04-20 Thread Rob Bate
For the last few days a bright male Summer Tanager and bright Blue Grosbeak
have been feeding on the north and east sides of the Sylvan Water in the
south-west corner of Greenwood Cemetery. There are some birch trees and a
budding fruit tree that have attracted the most attention. Along with the
charismatic birds there have been dozens of Yellow-rumps and Palms as well
as a few Pines. An Indigo Bunting is also in the area. I can't imagine
they've left overnight.
