[nysbirds-l] Central Park, May 12

2014-05-12 Thread Dawn Hannay
My overall impression of birding today is that whilst numbers are down from
the weekend, there are plenty of great birds to see. I started at the Pool
where I saw a Solitary Sandpiper on the grass, and where there were
surprising numbers of Northern Waterthrush. I saw at least 6 in the first
10 minutes. Unfortunately I was called out of the park, but returned to the
Ramble at about 11 AM. I will not list all that I saw but the highlights
were just that: a very cooperative Bay-breasted Warbler near the boat
concession by the Boathouse, followed closely by a Prothonotary Warbler at
the Point, and a very skulky Yellow-breasted Chat seen 3 times by me, and
finally by others at the Maintenance Meadow. I capped off the afternoon by
seeing a Clay-colored Sparrow just southeast of the playground at the 85th
and CPW entrance to the park. There had reportedly been 2 there earlier,
with another reported from Strawberry Fields.
