Hi Doug and all, I think this bird looks very good for bernicla. The flank pattern (not boldly and broadly white), the dark upperparts, and the smoky tone to the gray-brown parts of the plumage are all appropriate for bernicla, and the first and last of these three characters differ from the condition in the birds that we have tentatively identified as Gray-bellied Brant in the East. In addition to a couple of Red-necked Grebes in Gravesend Bay, and a nice mix of newly arrived short-distance migrant passerines (including 30 flickers) at Coney Island Creek Park, we had an apparent Dark-bellied Brant at the Six Diamonds ballfields adjacent to Coney Island Creek. Dark-bellied Brant is the nominate taxon (Branta bernicla bernicla) which breeds in Siberia and winters around the North Sea. There are a handful of prior North American sight and specimen records, including a specimen from New Jersey.
