Re:[nysbirds-l] HARRIS'S SPARROW, Central Park North Meadow, New York City
At least several dozen birders got to see the HARRIS'S SPARROW at the south end of the Central Park North Meadow, just west of the handball courts, this afternoon. The finder was Elizabeth Paredes, who quickly passed on the info to her husband John Anturi (@jhonny_2003 on Twitter), a frequent contributor of rare bird finds, photos, and videos on Manhattan Bird Alert, who passed the info along to us. A big thank you to them for getting us on this bird, an all-time first documented occurrence for Central Park and all Manhattan! We will have more photo and video coverage tonight (and tomorrow, if it shows up again), @BirdCentralPark on Twitter: https://twitter.com/BirdCentralPark David Barrett Manhattan On Sun, Nov 4, 2018 at 3:34 PM David Barrett wrote: > More precisely: HARRIS'S SPARROW is north of 97th Street underpass, > mid-park. [nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow - Altamont, NY - Yes
Got a brief glimpse of the Harris's Sparrow at 2:30pm this afternoon, confirming that it still is present in the yard at 579 Meadowdale Road, Altamont, NY. The Harris' popped out into the open for just a moment on the edge of the small fenced-in garden beyond the driveway on the south side of the backyard. In stand of spruce trees just north of the feeders on the west side of the street, details will be in Ed Beecher's and my ebird report (and mine eventually) , thin face , long ear Tufts, essentially a slimmer Great Horned Owl, good looks. [nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow YES 8:45 am Sun 2/18
The HASP continues at the same location in Altamont. Seen at 8:45 am from the road in the area of the thicket immediately to the left of the driveway. The homeowners are very nice, and are cool with birders viewing from top of driveway near the feeders. Per the previous post, park down the road. I parked near the red barns. [nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow in Altamont: yes
A Harris's Sparrow found yesterday in Altamont, Albany County by Larry Alden reappeared briefly this afternoon after a two-hour wait. The bird was seen near feeders at 579 Meadowdale Road today, and was originally seen in the brushy hedgerow just to the south. I spoke to the homeowner and he is fine with people coming to look from the road. The problem is parking: there is no shoulder there and no parking that doesn't block someone's driveway. But about 5 minutes walk south there is a small pullout for Black Creek Marsh Wildlife Management Area where you can fit two cars. -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES.htm http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birding.aba.org/maillist/NY01 Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow Time Out
Greetings, all. The kind and generous homeowners hosting the Harris's Sparrow and visiting birders have requested a little break in birder activity. They ask that they regain a little privacy Thanksgiving Day and Friday...They will be having family and friends coming and going those days. >From Pastor Paarlberg: *Rich,* *A break for a couple of days would be nice—at least Thursday and Friday. We’ll have a number of family members and guests coming and going those days anyway so it might be difficult to see the bird.* *People have been very generous with their donations. I’ve been carrying bags of food to the church nearly every day.* *Attached is the article I wrote for our newsletter.* *Have a happy Thanksgiving!* So, if you had plans to check out this rarity in the Albany area, please refrain both those days. I would like to attach the article Pastor Paarlberg wrote for his church newsletter, but I can't put attachments here. If you'd like to see a copy, please let me know I can forward it. [nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow - Update
I have not seen any reports positive or negative today. I also want to alert people who use e-bird that a new Hotspot has temporarily been created called - Stakeout Harris's Sparrow and I ask that people please merge their checklists into this one, so we can keep things a bit more organized (right now we have something like 50+ push pins for this one bird on the maps) To do this go to "My E-bird", click on "manage my locations" (on the right hand side), then find whatever the location you used for the Harris's Sparrow then click "edit" and then click "merge". When you click the Merge button, the new hotspot should appear, click on it to merge your checklist into the new spot and removing the old one. Just make sure you are only merging in the checklists with the Harris's Sparrow. Thanks! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me off list. With great appreciation to the kind homeowners who have allowed birders access to view this bird, and to Rich Guthrie for making the arrangements, Denise and I saw the Harris's Sparrow with many other birders this morning, several times between 10 AM and 11:15 AM. We, along with others, were able to get some distant photos of this great bird, which (hopefully) can be seen via my ebird report at the link below. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S25824943 The photos are heavily cropped and edited but do provide documentation. [nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow - OK again !!
I spoke with the homeowner this morning and all is forgiven (that's their nature). So birders are again welcome to come and visit the yard to watch for the Harris's Sparrow (and Bohemian Waxwing?). Today and tomorrow (Sunday) are now OK. Please - do not park in the driveway (apparently that's what precipitated the whole tailspin). Be mindful of the neighbors (that was not an issue - but just saying). One other thing - The man is a pastor of a downtown city church. It would be a nice gesture if folks would bring some item for the food bank (can of tuna, jar of peanut butter - whatever) and place it in a box that I will put out this morning. This harkens back to a sometimes popular token over in the UK where one would deposit a pound coin in a can at the gate to a farmyard, or the birdseed at a rare bird feeder (i.e., Gray Jay feeder up in Bloomingdale). Or not. That's me, not them speaking. He said that they can "police" the place if necessary. Let's not make that necessary. If you go, here's the drill - walk down the driveway (12 Bacon Lane) and go to the far end of the yard (by the phragmites) and look back to the right side of the deck. The sparrow has been coming to the base of the bright green shrub to pick up spillage from one of the deck feeders. The homeowner will be spreading some feed closer to the spruces to the right to encourage this flighty bird to feed over there rather than coming across the open lawn. Also check behind the barn for the waxwing which was feeding on multiflora rose hips with the groups of robins. [nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow - No more visitors
I'm not sure what happened, but the homeowner asked for their privacy back. After the 10 o'clock group, I had to take care of some other business and wasn't there. All i know for now is that there was an exchange between an unknown birder (unscheduled visitor) and this is the result. Bottom Line - no more visitors. If that changes, I'll post any updates. [nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow Yes - but

[nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow access - YES
I spoke with the homeowner this morning and received permission to allow limited access to his backyard by invitation. So here's the deal. The address is 12 Bacon Lane, Loudonville, NY. Bacon Lane is just north of Osborne Road. On the corner there's a Genoa Imports deli/grocery (I'm told they make a terrific sandwich). If you're interested in going there today (Friday) let me know and we can meet up this morning at 10 o'clock, and this afternoon at 2 o'clock and go in as a group. Tomorrow, Saturday, we can also meet up and go in again, So let's say 8 o'clock, 10 o'clock, and 2 o'clock. Same for Sunday. The goal here is to get as many people in as we can without disrupting these good people's lives and outwear our welcome. We can hope that the bird sticks around so that those who cannot make it this weekend can try at some later date. But by then, I would imagine that all that really want to will have "gotten" the bird by then. Incidentally, for the benefit of out of towners, the (somewhat) nearby Red-headed Woodpecker is still being seen daily, and the (less somewhat) nearby Townsend's Solitaire has been seen recently as well. -> So if interested, please e-mail me with a day and time that you think you can be there, and we can make arrangements. Again targeting 10 this morning, 2 this afternoon; 10 Saturday, 2 Saturday afternoon; and the same for Sunday. After that it will have to be more tailored arrangements. Please bear with us. This whole effort is to maintain some level of decorum so we don't cause stress, inconvenience or annoyance to the good homeowners. And there's no guarantee just how this somewhat skittish bird will react to a bunch of binoculars aimed in his direction. We;ll just have to see. [nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow Yes - but
In the hour that a group has been watching thus far this morning, the bird showed twice. Once for about 3 seconds and again for less time. Not everyone got to see it. While waiting a BOHEMIAN WAXWING showed nicely. !!!
Sorry. -- Richard Guthrie -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow access - YES
[nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow in Newcomb (Essex Co.)
11/17/12 Newcomb (western Essex Co.) Charlotte Demers just emailed a photo of a Harris's Sparrow at her feeders in Newcomb. It is a first winter bird. She doesn't know how long it has been around since she has been gone all week. The bird was discovered as she was doing Project Feederwatch this morning. She asked that visitors observe the feeders from the road - the feeders are on the right side of the house and easily viewed from the road. Charlotte's house is on Sanford Lane. Take Adam's Lane (off Route 28N) to the end (only a few hundred feet) and Charlotte's blue house is directly ahead at the intersection with Sanford Lane. (I recently posted the Bohemian Waxwings at this location. Charlotte mentioned that although the fruit is gone from the tree on her front lawn, there were still 3 Bohemian Waxwings in it this morning. In addition to Northern Cardinals at her feeders, a Tufted Titmouse also showed up today - certainly not usual species for the heavily wooded central Adirondacks!) [nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow
The 1st winter Harris's Sparrow in Canastota, NY continues as has been reported on the RBAs and on E-Bird today. Danny Messina and I made the trip up this morning arriving at 10:18am and the target bird, a "lifer" for him, mades it appearance from 10:45am -11:10am. Thanks to Ruth Kuryla, the homeowner, for making the id. and posting so that others could enjoy this neat transient.Subject: Exact location with map of Vermilion Flycatcher Orlando Wetlands (Orange County)Date: Sun Nov 4 2012 18:03 pmFrom: robert.wildlife AT yahoo.com For those of you not familiar with the most common location of the Vermilion Flycatcher at Orlando Easterly Wetlands (a.k.a. Orlando Wetlands Park), here is a map of the trails: http://orlandowetlands.org/trailmap.php?submenuheader=2 You can see there is a "Birding Route" with red dashes. Do not go toward cells 10 and 9, but go along the trail on the west side of cells 18, 16 to 17 to where the trail intersects with the Northeast corner of cell 13 (Wading Bird Marsh) and the Northwest corner of cell # 17.Go right at the intersection a short distance, maybe 50 yards. You will see Cypress trees to your right. The Vermilion Flycatcher was foraging on the nearest Cypress tree and then further back and went back and forth. This is the exact spot where I saw (and many others saw) the bird active last year. It is likely that others have seen this bird at other locations in the park. Before you get to this intersection, the trees on your right should be scanned also. Regarding "Birding Route" what a misnomer! The entire area of Orlando Wetlands can be excellent for birding--all of it is a "birding route". Besides a fabulous marsh, there are hammock trails and there is also a section on the other side of Wheeler Road that is sizeable and can be good also, plus it borders Seminole Ranch. The Birding Route does take you through some excellent wetlands that held high numbers of water birds today.
