Re: [nysbirds-l] Heckscher SP, Suffolk County

2018-09-28 Thread Mike
My apologies to Arie for responding publicly. My phone bundles people together
in ways I don’t understand.
I know we are on the same page as far as our concern for the birds and abiding
by the ABA guidelines. And I agree that splitting off to another notification
group is not a great solution.
We probably differ most in our faith in our fellow man- I’ve been in situations
now where I’ve had to shame people into not chasing a bird over and over, some
will stop and some won’t. I hope Arie is right and we can help people
understand where we’re coming from.

If reporting them means the birds are under constant harassment then yes, they
shouldn’t get reported. Guidelines like those promoted by the ABA should mean
something.
Or they can get reported to groups that can have some control over their
memberships. This is in no way a criticism of the Listserve, just recognition
of the fact that the Listserve can be viewed by anyone, whether they subscribe
or not.

[nysbirds-l] Heckscher SP, Suffolk County

2018-09-27 Thread Patricia Lindsay
Yesterday I was alerted to six juvenile Pectoral Sandpipers and two
Dunlin among the birds visiting the Heckscher puddles. When I arrived,
several people with cameras were out of their cars attempting to get
photos or get closer looks. These folks were approaching cautiously and
slowly, and while the birds did not immediately flush, they were
obviously hyper-alert, interfering with their ability to feed, rest and
preen in peace.

I was curious about the age of the Dunlins, as they were in a
transitional plumage I suspected to be molting juvs. So I returned to
the site this morning, where I was very upset to see, not for the first
time, photographers in two cars and a truck positioned RIGHT IN THE
PUDDLE, practically on top of and surrounding the birds. I decided this
would not be a pleasant study and left.

I can no longer remain silent on this issue. Folks, where is your common
sense, courtesy, and decency? Give these birds a chance! Is your photo
more important than the well-being of these migrating birds? Give other
birds who may be avoiding this disruption a chance to land and feed or
rest as well.  And give other birders a chance to see them! Another
birder, scoping the birds from great distance, through gaps among the
closely gathered vehicles, was completely blocked when  the truck,
already on top of the birds, was re-positioned to be EVEN CLOSER to the
birds.

PLEASE - Stay in your cars! Or scope from a distance.
PLEASE - Stay out of the main puddles. Especially do not drive up
near/onto the grassy berm in the center of the main puddle.
Please keep your distance --these long-distance migrants are dropping in
to rest and preen and feed, impossible with such pressure on them so
constantly.
And please have respect for others trying to see the birds.

The Dunlin, by the way, are indeed molting juveniles, as confirmed this
morning by Shai.

[nysbirds-l] Heckscher SP

2017-11-02 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta & I (Sy Schiff) reacted to a call and returned to Heckscher after
yesterday’s visit arriving about !:30. The HUDSONIAN GODWIT was in the puddle
with a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and DUNLIN in a neat grouping. And they
immediately flew off. The Godwit circled and landed close to where we were
parked. And then it flew off towards Field #6. Almost all the remaining
shorebirds flew off with it. Staying, were a few Greater Yellowlegs, Dunlin and
a pair of SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS. The latter were carefully checked for
Western Sandpiper, more common at this late date.

At Field #6, there were both GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and KILLDEER.
Ducks included MALLARD, BLACK, female PINTAIL, GREEN AND BLUE-WINGED TEAL. We
returned to Field #7 on the way home and the Godwit had again returned.
Patience required.

[nysbirds-l] Heckscher SP (Suffolk): American Golden Plover, Long-billed Dowitcher

2017-10-29 Thread GQ
I went to Heckscher SP (Suffolk) from 11:30 AM to about 1PM today. It rained
steadily but it was 64 degrees. There was a nice variety of shorebirds
providing very close views.
The highlights were 3 American Golden Plovers and a very nondescript
Long-billed Dowitcher that I initially could not pin down to species. Later,
Ken Thompson and Mike Cooper showed up and also couldn’t provide a positive ID
on a very wet bird.
Finally, the bird picked up and Mike was able to hear and make an audible
identification. Thanks Mike!!
Also present were roughly 40+ Dunlin, 1 Semipalmated Plover, and many Killdeer,
Greater Yellowlegs, and Black-bellied Plovers. A female Pintail was also in the
main pool.
I posted a few lousy photos to the eBird checklist of the Golden Plover and
Dunlin.
I tried to post a decent video of the dowitcher, too, but eBird would not
accept MP4 format. I tried converting to MP3 but it only took the audio portion.
If anyone knows how to convert MP4/upload to ebird, let me know and I’ll post
it.

Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] Heckscher SP shorebirds

2017-09-03 Thread GQ
A nice collection of shorebirds between 10AM and noon at the Field 7 parking
lot this morning, Heckscher SP. Very close views of all.
Besides the regulars, there were a single White-rumped Sandpiper, 2 Pectoral
Sandpipers, 2 Red Knot, and 1 lonely Short-billed Dowitcher (heard calling
before it left).
Many Semipalmated Plovers, Killdeer, Semipalmated Sandpipers, Least Sandpipers,
several Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs and Sanderling. About 8 or 10
Black-bellied Plover, including one very clean individual, an apparent juvenile
that kept to itself, with definite golden hues on the head and upper back
(but black axillars and white tail/rump in flight).
Also, a very ragged Horned Lark in the parking lot.
An Osprey dropped into the parking lot puddle amidst all the shorebirds and
proceeded to bath for some time. Most of the shorebirds seemed indifferent to
it but some seemed to be looking at it like we would look at a waiter with his
thumb in our soup.
