Joe Giunta, Sam Jannazzo and I (Sy Schiff) continued our new year (3 Jan) with
a birding day that included Pelham Bay Park.. We met in Hempstead Lake SP,
joining the South Shore Audubon group. There we found NORTHERN SHOVELER, COMMON
MERGANSERS, AMERICAN COOT, PIED-BILLED GREBES, GREAT BLUE HERONS, BELTED
KINGFISHER, BROWN CREEPER, WINTER WREN, a HERMIT THRUSH and RUSTY BLACKBIRDS,

>From there we went to Pelham with part of the Audubon contingent. Sitting out
>in the open was the BARRED OWL, a lifer for a few of our companions. We then
>went over to the Manor. Nothing new; both areas being a bit calm, but we got
>our target bird.

Returning to our meeting place at Hempstead, Joe and I stopped by Smith Pond.
There in the flock of GREEN-WINGED TEAL was the previously found COMMON TEAL
(still considered a subspecies on this side of the pond--we await the AOU
Record Committee to join the rest of the world. This bird has been split in
Europe, so get it while awaiting the eventual split here.) Other birds OF NOTE
included more GREAT BLUE HERON and PIED-BILLED GREBES and RING-NECKED DUCKS.
