[nysbirds-l] Hudson River

2017-04-27 Thread Larry Trachtenberg
Not a bird sighting but right along the shoreline between Scarborough and
Phillipse Manor stations a river otter was gliding southwards just now. Too
foggy to see from train if any birds flying up river. Those riding Hudson line

It's 70 degrees in November (wtf). So not surprisingly no waterfowl on the

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Basin night migration

2015-09-12 Thread Bill Evans
There was an exceptionally large flight of songbirds down the Hudson River
corridor last night. An acoustic station southeast of Albany detected 4000+
flight calls of migrant warblers. This is the fourth year of monitoring fall
flight calling from this location atop the Columbia Land Conservancy building
in downtown Chatham, NY. During this period there have been 6 nights with 2000+
calls, 3 nights with 3000+ calls, and last night was the first with 4000+.
http://oldbird.org/Data/2015/CLC/ColumbiaLC.htm

There is no indication the calling was exacerbated due to disorientation by
artificial light -- it appeared to be just one and sometimes two calls per
individual passing over. This suggests an unusually large pulse of migrants
today in the NYC area, 100 miles to the south.

In Hudson River off Mariandale Conf. Center and Retreat in Ossining this
morning Charlie Roberto had a raft of 104 Canvasback, which seem increasingly
rare on the river in recent years. Also seen of note were 2 American Widgeon,
and elsewhere on the property 3 pine siskin, 1 purple finch, and two wild

As an aside, I saw a first of season common loon from train right on shore
between Scarborough (Briarcliff Manor) and Phillips Manor (North Tarrytown)
yesterday.

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Schuylerville to Stillwater

2014-03-16 Thread scottvarney1968
Today's catch on the Upper Hudson from Schuylerville to Stillwater included
Redheads, Canvasbacks, FOY American Widgeon, Pintails, FOY Pied-billed Grebe,
FOY Turkey Vulture, FOY Wood Duck. Also saw a growing number of Ring-necked
Ducks, Common Goldeneyes, and Scaup. Perhaps best sight of the day were 2
Tundra Swans at Admirals Marina in Stillwater. Spring migrations are
officially under way in the lower Adirondack region of NY. Happy Birding!

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Gulls

2013-02-10 Thread Curt McDermott

Today, between 4:30 and 5:30PM, Clara Montenegro and I stopped at the
Hudson River along Newburgh waterfront to check on gulls. We were not
disappointed. My best guess is around 7500 gulls, that were riding the ice
flows to Cornwall and then flying back to Newburgh to start the ride over
again. The highlight, was 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, with a probably 4th.
All adult birds with one 3rd winter going into 4th year. The number of gulls
were so great, that I am sure there were immature birds that I missed. Could
have used some extra eyes, as they were traveling by at a pretty good clip.
Oddly, we did not see a white winged gull of any species although it is hard to
believe that none were present. There has to be something better among all
those birds. I hope this encourages some to check.

Good Birding,
 Curt McDermott

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Bald Eagles

2013-02-03 Thread Matthew Wills
I journeyed up to Hudson, NY, on Amtrak Saturday and returned to NYC today. I
saw six bald eagles on the way up, eight on the way down, mostly juveniles, but
several mature birds as well, all north of Peekskill and particularly between
Rhinecliff and Hudson, where there was a lot of ice on the river, particularly
Sunday. Could easily be some duplicates here, since the same roost had three
birds Saturday, two Sunday. My viewing out the window was very unscientific and
sporadic, but does suggest the presence of the birds up there this winter.

While up north, we walked down Ice House Road to Nutten Hook in Stuyvesant,
Columbia Co., where we had seven sightings of eagles, three perched on the
other side of the river, one on the ice in the middle of the river with two
crows probably eager for leftovers, and the others around the Hook itself. One
perching mature bird over route 9J was close enough for us to hear the loud
flap of its wings as it launched itself into the air.

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Eagles and More

2013-01-27 Thread John Askildsen
Yesterday, Kirsten and I surveyed the Hudson River from the Dutchess/Putnam
County line, south into Westchester, to Croton Point and then inland to the
Croton Reservoir. We came up with about 55 eagles, most of which were
concentrated in Peekskill, from the Bear Mountain Overlook, soouth to China
Pier. Then there was a collection of about 10 or so at Croton Reservoir.

we ran into a Mearns Club group that had started out earlier and felt would
probably tally around 75 or so eagles, based on our comparison of notes. These
eagles have apparently just arrived on the scene with the blast of cold air,
leading to the progressive freezing of lakes and ponds, and eventually, the
Hudson, which is now showing some signs of freezing up, north of Georges
Island.

Other birds of note from yesterday include for us, an adult Peregrine we found
roosting and hunting in the area of the Taconic Parkway's (northbound) bridge
that span the croton reservoir. it made a pass at a Cooper's hawk and pretty
much stuck to the top of the bridge's superstructure. we also heard from the
Mearns Club group of a roosting Peregrine frequenting the Westchester County
garbage plant, next to China Pier in peekskill.

they also had a Merlin somewhere in the area as well. There is currently a very
nice collection of waterfowl on the Croton reservoir's south side, about midway
between the dam and the Taconic Parkway's Croton River Bridges. It consists of
a few hundred birds, primarily hooded and common mergs, gadwall, ruddy duck,
coot, ringneck and more. This side of the reservoir may be accessed via
"reservoir rd", which skirts the south side of the reservoir.

Croton Point Park seemed rather birdless. The arificial meadow has been mowed,
making it look more appealing to golfers than birders (and birds). Ah, the

This side of the reservoir may be accessed via
reservoir rd, which skirts the south side of the reservoir.

Croton Point Park seemed rather birdless. The arificial meadow has been mowed,
making it look more appealing to golfers than birders (and birds). Ah, the
Westchester County Parks Dept management team 'strikes again'.

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Storm Birds

2012-10-30 Thread Peter Post

As many as 15 or more birders spent part or most of the day on the
Upper West Side of Manhattan (the 70's) on the Hudson River. Since no
one else has posted the results to this list I thought I would list
the highlights.

American Oystercatcher. 1 flying down river. A first (?) for NY County.
A number of Forster's Terns.
A group of 3 unidentified Jaegers (spotted by Andrew Farnsworth)
believed to be a Pomarine and 2 Parasitics.
Not seen by me: A Herring Gull capturing a Leach's Petrel and flying
off with it.

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Birds/ Orange County

2012-10-30 Thread Curt McDermott

Today from 9am to 2pm, I was able to get out and bird the Hudson River between
Newburgh and Cornwall in Orange County. All the normal stuff until about
12:30. After 12:30, I had the following:

4 - Common Loon in a group
10- Surf Scoter
1- Shearwater Species ( too far out to ID/rain) Painful!!!
2- Peregrine Falcon ( 1 appeared to be eating on the wing-something I did not
think was possible for them.)
1- Immature Bald Eagle
Several Flocks of Brant flying

All birds seen from Cornwall. Also 1 Brant next to Torches Restaurant in
Newburgh, first seen yesterday.

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Update

2012-10-29 Thread Jacob Drucker

Hi All,

I got to the Hudson at about 8:30 this am, and though Peter Scully and I didn't
see anything too absurdly oceanic we had a few WHITE-WINGED and a BLACK SCOTER,
likely trying to avoid the storm. A PINE SISKIN was a nice surprise too. Nearly
all birds were flying up river.

The weather wasn't too bad on hurricane standards with very little rain. Of
course it was windy but working with binoculars was definitely manageable. The
water level was also quite high, occasionally just spilling over the sea wall,
but with the tide falling as I left this became less of an issue. In regards to
the Upper West Side, if the water levels and rain are in decent condition, the
70th st pier is an ideal spot to look, but most of our birding was done from
the Boat Basin Cafe on 79th st, which is very well sheltered and would be ideal
for viewing if the rain becomes heavy and if storm surge becomes a problem.

Full list with comments here:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11894032

Good birding and stay safe,
Jacob Drucker

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Birds - Lesser Scaup

2012-01-18 Thread Jesse Jaycox
1/18/2012 - From the Hudson River waterfront at Newburgh (near Renwick St.), I
observed many ring-billed gulls out on the open water, a few great black-backed
gulls, several mallards, and several common mergansers. The mergansers were not
as plentiful as last week, when I had seen large rafts of them out on the
river. There was also a lone female lesser scaup present, not far from the
shore today. The scaup showed up three times while I was there, one time with
several mallards.

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Dutchess-Columbia Counties

2011-01-16 Thread John Askildsen
I birded the the east shore of the Hudson River today from Clermont, Columbia County, to Staatsburg, Dutchess County. The river was pretty well frozen over, with the exception of the ship channel. There was little to report other than 12 Bald Eagles, with four at Clermont State Historic Site, four at Rhinecliff and another four scattered individuals from there south to Norrie Point State Park. Perhaps 1/3 were adults.Waterfowl was limited to about 100 or so Common Mergansers and a handful of Black Ducks. Herring, Ring-billed and Great Black-backed Gulls were also present. The highlight of my day might have been a red morph eastern screech owl that i observed in an oak tree beside my driveway before entering my vehicle, being harrassed by blue jays. The oak still holds much of its leaf mast in place, where the screech thought it was likely safe and sound. The owl took a few good jabs from the jays and then fled.Slightly off topic, i feel i must note that despite the icy, relatively birdless landscape, the view of the Hudson River, with the snow covered Catskill high peaks as a back drop is quite impressive scenery to behold.   JPA John AskildsenMillbrook, Dutchess County, New York
