Hi everyone, I visited the West End of Jones Beach this afternoon. As reported earlier, Gull-billed Terns had a good presence, with a total of five very vocal birds hawking insects over the median and resting on the Boat Basin spit. Large Black-bellied Plover flocks were moving around, and small numbers of Red Knots and Short-billed Dowitchers were visible among them. When I was there, the reported flock of White-throated Sparrows beside the road to the Coast Guard contained nothing of extra merit. However, behind the hedgerow there were at least three White-crowned, one Savannah, one Field, and one Lincoln's Sparrow (with a few Songs). It was nice having the more notable sparrows separated from the dozens of White-throated! Breeding plumaged Common Loons in the bay, one or two Merlins hunting over the dunes, and that was about it. My survey was not too thorough, but a single Yellow Warbler was the only warbler I came across. Best, Brendan Fogarty Hempstead, NY http://www.flickr.com/photos/birderbf/
