[nysbirds-l] Looking for early migrants

2015-03-31 Thread syschiff
Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) went looking for migrants, starting at Hempstead
Lake SP. On a short walk north along the stream, we found 7 PINE WARBLERS, 1
PALM WARBLER, 2 NORTHERN FLICKERS, many EASTERN PHOEBES and a YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER among other birds..

Having found our target warblers first thing, we headed for Alley Pond Park.
Again there were Pine Warblers and Eastern Phoebes, but only 3 grackles and a
cowbird and Redwing for blackbirds. There were no groups of redwings and no
redwing song at either place. Strange for a bright, sunny, almost spring day.
Again we had an assortment of resident/winter birds.

A phone call hastened our return with a stop at Valley Stream SP. There, with
on site birding help, we saw more PINE WARBLERS and the YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER
along the "Valley Stream" for which the park is named.
