[nysbirds-l] Mew Gull -YES

2015-01-22 Thread Doug Gochfeld
Paul Bourdin texted to say that he had the MEW GULL at Caeser's Bay
(Caeser's Bay is the the shopping center at the end of Bay Parkway, next to
where Shai's parking directions take you to) about 20 minutes ago. It came
into the main flock of Ring-billed Gulls a bit to the west of Caeser's Bay
and was around briefly before disappearing. He is still currently on site
looking to re-find it.

[nysbirds-l] MEW GULL - YES

2010-01-22 Thread Peter W. Post
Greetings!

I went to Brooklyn today to search for the Mew (Common) Gull. I parked in
the first lot SE of the Verrazano Bridge and walked toward Kohl's Department
Store. At 11:45 I found the bird standing on the rocks opposite the end of
B19 Street. It flew up onto the railing that lines the pedestrian walk,
within six feet of me, after I tossed some bread in its direction. It
remained there until a couple of pedestrians flushed it. It returned to the
rocks but flew off towards the Verrazano a few minutes later.

I started walking back to my car and relocated the Mew Gull, standing on the
pedestrian walkway, opposite the end of B16th Street with a group of
Ring-bills. I took out some bread and the bird literally, on numerous
occasions, came within 12 inches of my hand. Just as I was running out of
bread it took off back towards B19th Street. That was at about 12:30.

If you go bring plenty of bread! And bring your camera (I took about 100
photos).

Re: [nysbirds-l] Mew Gull - Yes

2010-01-06 Thread Robert Lewis
Hi,

I saw the bird around 12:05 pm just as described below, just east of the
footbridge.

About ten minutes earlier I arrived and met three other birders there. They
had been there for some time, and had not seen the bird. We split up, and they
walked east toward the parking area. About five minutes after that, the bird
landed in the small flock. I took some photos and will upload them later. The
bird flew off about ten minutes later. Interestingly, it and a few
Ring-billeds flew to the neighborhood just north of the footbridge - i.e. the
other side of the footbridge, where one can easily park. It looked like they
were landing in the playground over there. By the time I got there, there was
nothing present but a dog walker.
