This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, September 11th 2009 at 10:30pm. The highlights of today's tape are AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, AMERICAN AVOCET, WHIMBREL, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, WILSON'S PHALAROPE and CLAY-COLORED SPARROW. Seventeen species of shorebirds were seen Tuesday at the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge highlighted by an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS, 5 STILT SANDPIPERS and 1 WILSON'S PHALAROPE. Two WHIMBRELS, reported last week at Drier Offerman Park in Brooklyn, were present through last Monday. Also seen at Drier Offerman Park on Saturday were 3 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, 1 CLAY-COLORED SPARROW and 100 BOBOLINKS. Another CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen last Saturday at parking field 2 of Robert Moses State Park on Fire Island. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was found last Saturday at Jones Beach West End. Fifteen ROYAL TERNS were seen at Pike's Beach in Westhampton Dunes last Sunday and 9 birds were still present on Tuesday. Today, a northeast storm system drove over 2,000 COMMON TERNS, 1 CORY'S SHEARWATER, and 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS in an easterly direction off Amagansett during a short seawatch. On Wednesday 15 species of warblers were seen in Central Park highlighted by TENNESSEE WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER and BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER. A 3rd year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was found today at Heckscher State Park in Great River. The NORTHERN WHEATEAR, found last weekend in Stratford Connecticut, in Sikorsky Airport along Great Meadow Road was still present today.
