Betsy and I hit a few spots on the river from Niagara Falls to Lewiston this
afternoon. We focused mainly on the Bonaparte's Gulls, which come into the
river at this time of the year in large numbers when it is very windy, as it
was today. The highlight was a juvenile SABINE'S GULL, which was flying
into the mist of the Horseshoe (Canadian) Falls. We viewed the bird from
Goat Island on the NY side. Viewing would be better from the Ontario side
although the cost of parking there is steep or a long walk is required. We
also had five LITTLE GULLS - two above the falls, one below, and two more at
Lewiston/Queenston, all adults. Other birds of interest were a COMMON
GOLDENEYE and a PIED-BILLED GREBE in the Maid-of-the-Mist cove across from
the American Falls, an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL in the shallows above
the third of the Three Sister Islands, and a darker-mantled Herring-type
gull, presumably a hybrid, below the falls.

If anyone desires additional information about these birds or locations,
please email me off-list.

Good birding!
Willie
