[nysbirds-l] Purple Martins Return Today to Croton Point

2021-04-07 Thread Anne Swaim
Glad for eBird report by Michael Grossman this morning of two Purple
Martins on the nesting tower by the entrance booth at Croton Point Park.

Fifth year for martin occupancy at this tower, established by Saw Mill
River Audubon with funding support from the Feed the Birds store in
Croton-on-Hudson and the Westchester Parks Foundation.

Of note is a second nesting tower up for third year at Rockwood Hall State
Park to the south along the Hudson. Last year, second year, this tower
also attracted nesting Purple Martins so hopefully they will have returns
this year as well.

(Note that one martin decoy is present on both towers and both decoys have
inadvertently been eBirded in past years...)

Re: [nysbirds-l] Purple Martins at Lemon Creek, Richmond Co.

2017-07-04 Thread Seth Wollney
Mathew,

This dates are when Howard Cleaves set up the houses. He had his first colony
in his front yard on Purdy Place in 1917 but took it down when he left Staten
Island. Upon his return in the early 1950's, Cleaves once again set up houses
but this time put them on Johnston Terrace where they have been since their
construction. Beside a two-three year period in the early 2000's there have
been at least a few pairs there every year.

The proper name for the area is indeed Prince's Bay... named for which English
prince was around at the time it was named. Princess Bay is an incorrect
monicker resulting from poor annunciation.

[nysbirds-l] Purple Martins at Lemon Creek, Richmond Co.

2017-07-04 Thread Matthew Wills
We stopped off at the Purple Martin colony at Lemon Creek Park on Staten Island
yesterday for the first time in four years. Glad to see the birds are still
returning. There were fledglings out and about, and, judging from parents still
entering nests regularly, nestlings to be fed.

There are at least a half dozen Purple Martin nests in the houses; counting is
complicated by all the coming and going. House Sparrows and European Starlings
have taken a good number of the nest spots.

In Birds of the New York Area (1964), Ball cites a long study that marked a
single pair of nesting Purple Martins at Princess Bay* (which Lemon Creek feeds
into) in 1917. Then nothing until 1951, when 2 pairs nested. In 1961 there were
50 pairs.

*"Princess Bay" is found on older maps, but it is now more generally called
"Prince's Bay."

Happy 4th!

Happy 4th!

[nysbirds-l] Purple martins croton point

2017-06-09 Thread Larry Trachtenberg
The "colony" seems to have grown exponentially overnight. I saw 3 birds (none
adult M) this morning in my ten minute coffee stop. A friend I saw there
believes he may have had a fourth, an adult male, a bit earlier and will check
his photos. Two martins appeared to be going in and out of "gourds" to left and
right of a tree swallow occupied gourd. Clearly a tiff going on. Nota Bene: on
the roosting pole there is a DECOY adult Male martin which I have been told has
been reported to E-bird (not sure it "counts"). If successful this would be the
first (or at least currently extant) Westchester colony to my knowledge. The
gourd "complex" is right by the office as you drive in. Next week is Clearwater
Festival so chance to see some great music: Richard Thompson!, Los Lobos, Nick
Lowe, Joan Osborne, Dar Williams, Alejandro Escovedo, Lake Street Dive, Blind
Boy Paxton, Josh Ritter, etc. in an amazing setting (and purple martins and
bobolinks to boot), not to mention Blue Pig Ice Cream.

[nysbirds-l] Purple Martins - New Paltz

2017-06-02 Thread Richard Guthrie
Thanks to the care and maintenance by the Thruway and nearby neighbors, the
Purple Martin colony at the east side of the New Paltz Thruway exit lane is
doing very well this year.

With birds coming and going to the many occupied next boxes and gourds, it
is hard to get a good count, but I'd estimate that there are at least a
dozen pairs in residence, more likely more.

The birds can easily be seen from the shoulder of the exit land (after
exiting the toll booths) or from the Park & Ride lot on the west side of
the lanes. You can get much closer to the birds at the end of Paradies Lane
off Rt. 299. The good folks nearest to the martin colony welcome viewers.
But there's no need to go off the public road since the martins frequently
fly up to the utility lines and shrubs close to the road.

The heron colony north of Rt. 299 seems to be thriving as well.

[nysbirds-l] Purple Martins - New Paltz, Ulster County

Upstate travellers might be interested in checking out the PURPLE MARTIN
colony at the New Paltz exit of the NYS Thruway (Exit 18). With an easy
off-on, you can go through the toll plaza and pull off to the right
shoulder or into the Park & Ride lot on the left. The colony of about 20
pairs occupy the houses and maybe the gourds put up for them by the Thruway
Authority and maintained by the neighbors. If you want a closer look, you
can go to the traffic light ahead, turn right and take the first right turn
onto Paradies Road - then go to the end. The neighbors there are very
birder (and martin) friendly.

Yesterday, I happened to look over to the nest boxes and noticed a gray
squirrel climbing up one of the poles. I went over and chased the squirrel
down That was not difficult to do since squirrels do not like to be
cornered up a tree - or pole - isolated from other trees. The squirrel
quickly descended the pole and scurried over to the woodlot. One of the
neighbors came over to see what was happening so I mentioned the squirrel
problem with a suggestion that they put up a baffle to keep it and other
predators out of the nest boxes.

While in the area, you might like to check out the very easy viewing
opportunity for RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS at Weston Road, east of the martin
colony. Refer to your eBird Hotspot map for directions.
