Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Rosy Finch?
Today seems to be the first day that the Rosy Finch missed its 6:30 AM feeding routine. Mike Scheibel and I were on site at 6:10 AM and watched the feeders until 8:00 AM. The action peaked at 7:30 AM with large numbers of American Goldfinch. In the mix were American Tree Sparrow, Pine Siskin, Purple Finch and others. The Sugar River Northern Shrike also continued. After I left, I phoned Bobby Kurtz around 9:00 AM who was also on site but reported NO Rosy. Given Arie's Thursday report and today's results I'd say it's not looking good for a weekend showing. Best of luck to anyone that follows up and thanks again to Nancy Loomis for her kind hospitality. [nysbirds-l] Rosy-Finch - NO
Eight other birders and I made the assault on Black Dome Mountain this morning and as of when I left the summit area, at 10:30 AM, the bird was a no-show. There was 4-6 inches of snow at the summit and all tree branches were coated with snow for several hundred feet below the elevation of the summit. If I had to guess, I would think that the bird headed down the south slope and it might be worthwhile searching the vicinity of East Jewett and Colgate Lake to see if anyone has feeders out. Here's hoping that someone tracks it down. The only real highlights of the hike were two Common Ravens on the hike in, two Brown Creepers, and, at the summit feeding on the abundant Mountain Ash berries, an American Robin. The only finch species we had was a small flock of American Goldfinch. Despite dipping the rosy-finch it was a very worthwhile hike with magnificent views. Finally, on my predawn drive to the trailhead I had both an Eastern Screech Owl and a Barred Owl fly in front of my car (the screech on CR 23C the Barred on CR 56 just east of Maplecrest). [nysbirds-l] Rosy Finch GPS correction
It has come to my attention that the correct GPS location of the bird is actually 16.199, not .191. So the actual coordinates should be: 42 degrees 16.199'N, 74 degrees 07.361' in case anyone wanted to follow a GPS to the exact point. I know little about typical Rosy-Finch winter behavior, but I suspect that if it's still around, it would range over the area looking for food, and that one might want to check the entirety of the path. It appeared to have been on the ground on the path when we first saw it, and then jumped up into a dead fir, and was last seen picking at something in a birch tree. The bird was unfortunately silent, though it might end up hanging out with any feeding flocks it finds, especially if it meets up with some other finches. The areas in the Catskills above 3500' are a sensitive and fragile area, so I'd encourage people to stay on the marked trails.
