I believe the Osprey nest there has failed. There was no evidence of the pair
anywhere in the park and I spent more than half an hour there. I have seen at
least one Osprey each time I visited the place.

That's the Jones Beach Boys that Andrew knew. But I started birding Jones
Beach around 1982 or so. Sy was one of the first birders I knew (and he was
always happy to chat and teach). The rest of the Jones Beach group then
included Al Wollin, Neil Ward, Stephen Dempsey, Manny Levine, and Matt

Seymour (Sy) Schiff passed away on Thursday, January 14, at the age of 93. I
learned this from his dear friend Joe Giunta, who had been in touch with Sy
regularly and made inquiries when he couldn’t be reached. I understand that a
service has already been held, but I will discuss with Joe how

Dear New York Birders,
I learned yesterday that Bob May passed away on Monday.
Bob was a long-time Long Island birder and a dear friend of many. It was always
a pleasure to meet him in the field--whether it was a reunion between old
friends, or, for newer birders who had never met him before,

Dear Fellow Birders,
It is with sadness that I let you know that our friend Sarah Elliott passed
away on October 12th. Sarah was a longtime member of the Linnaean Society of
New York. She led nature walks in Central Park and elsewhere, and maintained
the bird sighting book in the Boathouse.

I have heard via Bob Kessler (who lives on Upper Lake and who first spotted
the Trumepter Swans several years ago) that the Trumepter Swan which was
shot last month has passed away under the care of the rehabber.
On an unrelated note, I received an e-mail recently about a "naturalist"
training

Yesterday I learned that Paul Gillen of Southold, Long Island, died last
