For at least the last (5) days, a Greater White-fronted Goose has been at
Marratooka Lake, Mattituck, Suffolk Co. at 1 PM. I finally caught up with "
Gillen's Goose" today at 12:40 (it was still there when I left at 1 PM), after
missing it on 11/7 by (15) minutes! I also missed it last week, after it was
found by Paul Gillen (of Black-tailed Godwit fame) and seen by John Sep on a
sod farm in Peconic later that day, and then back at Marratooka Lake the next.
Also of note were the (17) A. Coot seen feeding and bathing, in quite a
colorful setting, on such a glorious day!
Continuing east for a visit to the podiatrist in Southold, I came across a
flock of ~ (350) Canada Geese in a farm field at the S/E/C/O Main Rd. (Route
25) & Locust Ave (no street sign) in Mattituck. This intersection is (4)
telephone poles W/O Evergreen Rd. In addition to finding (3) of the canadas
tagged & banded, I had my FOS Richardson's Cackling Goose.
CAGO #1) Yellow neck tag # GP5, with silver band between knee & ankle of right
leg, plus yellow tag between knee & ankle of left leg.
CAGO #2) Yellow neck tag # GIT, with silver band between knee & ankle of right
leg.
CAGO #3) No neck tag in evidence. Silver band between knee & ankle of right
leg, plus yellow tag #600 between knee & ankle of left leg.
I will be submitting this tag/band info. to the U.S. Geological Survey/Canadian
Wildlife Service and will pass on any "origin" data included in the return
correspondence.
Cheers, Bob
