The Virginia Rail was still in Abington Square Park (West Village, NYC) today
as of 5PM. It was spending most of the time foraging in shrubbery (and not
visible), but made occasional forays across the paths and open lawn.

Evidently a Virginia Rail has been present in lower Manhattan's Abingdon
Square Park for a day or so. A visit Sunday morning was rewarded with a
bit of patience. Bird takes refuge in the green perennial patches, but
ventures out to forage at edges and more open exposures without
provocation.

There is a Virginia Rail in Prospect Park, in a small patch of phragmites
directly opposite the Wellhouse. It is skulking deep in the reeds and takes
some patience, unlike the one last month. Getting late for them, too, I
think.

I had to stop at my office 49/Madison before heading down to Dead & Co. at MSG
thought I'd stop and look for Virginia rail no luck but at 430 pm in front of

catbird, male E. Towhee and a thrush which I am quite sure

I just received a note from Evan Cutler that he's
spotted a Virginia Rail, last seen tonight just before 6:30pm, in the
shrubbery on the northwest corner of 6th Ave. and 49th St. across from 30
Rockefeller Center (30 Rock). It appears to be healthy and feeding in the
patch.

Just a follow-up on the Virginia Rail: I have seen a discussion on another
board suggesting this bird *may* have been released by the Wild Bird Fund.
It is too late to confirm either way, but I wanted people to know that
there is some question of provenance before they go out of their way to try
There is an apparently reliable (yet still unconfirmed) eBird report this
evening (April 23) of a *Virginia Rail* in the Loch, which is the small
stream in the North End of Central Park.
The last Virginia Rail known to visit Central Park, in September 2013,
stayed overnight at least once.

Just before 3:30 this afternoon at Bayard Cutting Arboretum (Great River,

Count, I found a VIRGINIA RAIL. It was feeding along the south shoreline of
the cove that extends off the Connetquot River south of Breezy island

Someone sent me a photo of an "unusual bird" they saw this afternoon in Harold
Sq. Park... I get a lot of these messages and assumed it would be a
funny-looking pigeon, but it was actually a Virginia Rail sitting on a stone
bench!
