[nysbirds-l] eBird Hotspots: Recently Added (New York County)

2019-02-07 Thread Ben Cacace
I've been looking for a way to show where new hotspots have been created by
county and decided to display them on a Google Map that shows all hotspots
and personal locations. A new marker (persimmon colored circle) denotes a
recently added hotspot.

Hotspots (separated by # of checklists):

   - *New:* Persimmon circles
   - *Top 80%:* Fire brick teardrops (55.4K lists)
   - *Bottom 20%:* Teal teardrops (15.1K lists)

Personal Locations:

   - with *10 or more* checklists: Gold flags
   - with *less than 10* checklists: Gray dots

Google Maps: Recent Hotspot Additions (New York County)

Let me know if you're having issues navigating the map. You can search for
a location and select '*Highlight all matches from my map*' from the drop
down list. If you do this for 'Central Park' you'll see a few outlier
personal locations. One is on Governors Island. We look to fix these when
they're found by contacting the owner of the location.

If you wish to merge any of your personal locations with an existing
hotspot here are the steps:

— Sign into eBird.org
— Go to "My eBird" & select "Manage My Locations" in the right panel
— At the bottom of the screen click "Show All" to see all locations on one
page
— You can sort the list by clicking on any of the headers: Location,
Country, State/Province, County, Type* or # of Checklists
— Select your personal location (it will show a letter "P" under Type*) by
clicking "Edit" on the right side of the line
— Select the "Merge" button and you'll see all nearby hotspots as red icons
— Keep the checkmark for "Delete after merging" selected
— Click the icon that best fits your location
— ... now you'll see the hotspot description above the 'Merge' button along
with the # of checklists you'll be merging
— Click on the 'Merge' button
— Answer Yes to the 'Yes or No' query

All checklists for that personal location will be combined with the hotspot
with this process.
