[nysbirds-l] Grace's Warbler Stuff

2012-01-05 Thread Steve Walter
Unfortunately, this isn't a positive report for today. Just another picture
to show - like you all need more of that. But this is an opportunity to plug
my new web site. Actually, it's my very old invertebrate web site - with a
makeover to include bird galleries and a more polished forum for placing
timely pictures and features. The current feature on the Grace's Warbler
comes with an account of the finding, which Doug Gouchfeld has grace-iously
provided.

[nysbirds-l] Grace's Warbler status?

2012-01-05 Thread Andy Guthrie
I heard one early negative report from Point Lookout, and I assume from the
lack of further reports that the Grace's Warbler was not seen today. Any
specific comments on the day's attempts, especially if it was looked for
and not seen later in the day, might be useful for those of us who are
still thinking of making a trip to the area. In addition, any reports from
tomorrow, positive or negative, would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Andy Guthrie

RE: [nysbirds-l] Grace's Warbler NO

2012-01-02 Thread Richard Guthrie
Bill Lee and I arrived from upstate NY at about 2 30 PM Jan 2nd. There were
about a dozen birders looking in from the parking lot north loop road when we
got there. Nobody was “on” the bird when we arrived, so we joined in the vigil,
watching from the paved road surface (which included one woman who was about to
walk into the pines with her dog on a leash – fortunately after some
intervention that didn’t happen. But why was there a dog on a leash there in
the first place???). It was windy and cold standing out there waiting for the
bird to show. It didn’t. Gradually people began to leave until by about 3 30,
there were only three birders still looking, Bill, myself and one other birder.

By 4 00 it was just the two of us. And by 4 30 light began to fade and
presuming the bird had gone to roost, we decided to leave, We had a long drive
back home.

Good luck to anyone going tomorrow – and please be sure to share your findings
as soon as you can so others who have a long drive can decide whether to go or
not.

I will post a wider array of photos of the bird in an album labeled "Grace's
Warbler" at this site later:
https://picasaweb.google.com/Douglas.Gochfeld

A couple of things to take into account when going for the bird tomorrow:
1) It will be very windy for the next two days, and this afternoon after the
wind picked up the bird hunkered down and wasn't seen again as far as I am
aware. It was certainly still there, but the way the pines were getting
buffeted by the wind, it shouldn't be surprising that it wasn't being
conspicuous. It's still gotta feed though, so hopefully when it warms up a
bit tomorrow it will be forced into view for extended periods of time
somewhere. Before the wind picked up (it was almost calm and then picked up
to 20+ MPH blowing directly into the treeline the GRWA was frequenting) it
was not incredibly difficult to re-locate, although it still could have
easily been passed over had one not known it was in there.

2) Park in the parking lot itself, rather than along the entrance road. The
police here have a history of taking issue with birders parked out of the
lot, although they seemed to tolerate it today (or not notice it). It's
literally only 12 feet or so of a longer walk.

3) It's gonna get pretty cold tomorrow night, so if anyone wants to bring an
insect swarm (the native kind, no emerald ash-borers please) to feed it,
that would be good.

I'm only mostly kidding about the last part.

Good Birding!

3) It's gonna get pretty cold tomorrow night, so if anyone wants to bring an
insect swarm (the native kind, no emerald ash-borers please) to feed it,
that would be good.

I'm only mostly kidding about the last part.

Good Birding!

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Grace's Warbler photos etc.

I've posted a few shots I took of the Grace's Warbler we found this morning

at Point Lookout (during the Southern Nassau CBC), including one of what a
representative view for many people who came later was, here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/29840397@N08/?saved=1

I will post a wider array of photos of the bird in an album labeled Grace's

Warbler at this site later:
https://picasaweb.google.com/Douglas.Gochfeld

And by 4 30 light began to fade and
presuming the bird had gone to roost, we decided to leave, We had a long drive
back home.

Good luck to anyone going tomorrow – and please be sure to share your findings
as soon as you can so others who have a long drive can decide whether to go or
not.

[nysbirds-l] Grace's Warbler photos etc.

2012-01-01 Thread fresha2411
I've posted a few shots I took of the Grace's Warbler we found this morning at
Point Lookout (during the Southern Nassau CBC), including one of what a
representative view for many people who came later was, here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/29840397@N08/?saved=1

I will post a wider array of photos of the bird in an album labeled "Grace's
Warbler" at this site later:
https://picasaweb.google.com/Douglas.Gochfeld

A couple of things to take into account when going for the bird tomorrow:
1) It will be very windy for the next two days, and this afternoon after the
wind picked up the bird hunkered down and wasn't seen again as far as I am
aware. It was certainly still there, but the way the pines were getting
buffeted by the wind, it shouldn't be surprising that it wasn't being
conspicuous. It's still gotta feed though, so hopefully when it warms up a bit
tomorrow it will be forced into view for extended periods of time somewhere.
Before the wind picked up (it was almost calm and then picked up to 20+ MPH
blowing directly into the treeline the GRWA was frequenting) it was not
incredibly difficult to re-locate, although it still could have easily been
passed over had one not known it was in there.

2) Park in the parking lot itself, rather than along the entrance road. The
police here have a history of taking issue with birders parked out of the lot,
although they seemed to tolerate it today (or not notice it). It's literally
only 12 feet or so of a longer walk.

3) It's gonna get pretty cold tomorrow night, so if anyone wants to bring an
insect swarm (the native kind, no emerald ash-borers please) to feed it, that
would be good.

I'm only mostly kidding about the last part.

Good Birding!
-Doug Gochfeld. Brooklyn, NY.

Thank you, Angus. And, may I add that prompt posting if the bird is
relocated in the morning would be appreciated by those of us who couldn't
get down there today. I, for one, am putting my plans for tomorrow on hold,

I was at the Pt. Lookout beach parking lot looking for the Grace's Warbler in
the Japanese Pines to the left of the boulder field from about 1:30 to 4:30pm
without any luck.  As far as I know nobody saw it during the time I was there.
Did see an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull in the lot though.

[nysbirds-l] Grace's Warbler no

2012-01-01 Thread Andrew Block
I was at the Pt. Lookout beach parking lot looking for the Grace's Warbler in
the Japanese Pines to the left of the boulder field from about 1:30 to 4:30pm
without any luck.  As far as I know nobody saw it during the time I was there.
Did see an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull in the lot though.

[nysbirds-l] Grace's Warbler vagrancy

2012-01-01 Thread Angus Wilson
Several people asked me today about previous records of Grace's
Warbler in the East. I couldn't think of any but did some searching
this evening to see what, if anything turns up. Seems there is at
least one substantiated record east of the Mississippi (just), a
well-photographed bird at Montrose Point, Chicago (Cook Co.), Illinois
in September 2003.

Photo here: http://www.illinoisbirds.org/photo_archives/graces_warbler.html

There may also be records from Quebec and Newfoundland but I've not
been able to track down the specifics. On the wrong side of the
Mississippi River, there is also a May 2008 record from western
Nebraska (Garden Co.). That's it! Anybody find any other E-o-t-M
records?

Hats of to Doug and Andrew for a really outstanding find and kudos to
Seth and other for spreading the news via posts or phone calls. I can
easily believe 150-200 people saw the bird today. It will interesting
what other goodies the Southern Nassau CBC turns up and let's hope the
warbler reappears tomorrow.

Prompt posting of any news (positive or negative) will be helpful to
other folks contemplating the drive from more distant parts.

I will post a wider array of photos of the bird in an album labeled Grace's
Warbler at this site later:
https://picasaweb.google.com/Douglas.Gochfeld
