A morning stroll through Union Square Park at 14th Street in Manhattan produced
the following birds:

Yellow bellied sapsucker-2
Hermit thrush-3
Black throated blue- male-1
Common yellowthroat-1
Yellow rumped Warbler-7
Eastern Towhee-1
White throated sparrows-many

No, that's not a Common Raven; it's an American Crow (an adult, probably male).
The square tail, relatively thin bill, and smooth, short throat feathers are
all wrong for raven, but just right for crow. A raven should have a tail that
is longer in the middle than the sides, a very deep bill,
Yesterday I led walks at Wave Hill in the AM and Central Park in the afternoon.
Although the sheer numbers were lower than Saturday, the diversity did not
disappoint.
It was a strange day weather-wise: raw, breezy, cloudy and cold in the morning,
and then warm clear and sunny in the afternoon.
Derek Rogers' Eurasion Wigeon has moved north. It is now on Mill Pond in
Sayville. Mill Pond is on Montauk Highway just east of the train tracks in
Sayville NY

The NELSON'S SPARROWS were very cooperative. Viewing the saltmarsh was
easily done by following the edge plantings to the east and going down to
the water's edge and standing on the rocks. We (Dale Dancis, Kathy and
myself) had 3 Nelson's Sparrows in the same binocular field of view several
times.
The House of Representatives recently passed a bill authorizing the industrial
use of Gateway National Park. A proposed high pressure gas pipeline will go
directly under the beach at Riis Park, under protected wetlands in Jamaica Bay,
and a proposed metering station in Floyd Bennett Field, a
I watched Lake Ontario from home for nearly 4 and 1/2 hours this morning.
There was a nice flight of waterbirds, with the highlight bird coming only ten
minutes into my watch - a breeding-plumaged PACIFIC LOON! See details below.
After watching for about 3 and 1/2 hours, I decided to quit at
