Wed., 25 March, 2020 - Manhattan, N.Y. City A finely-plumed Great Egret plunked down in the small pond in Morningside Park on Wed. morn’ - a number of neighborhood folk & passersby, including me & my camera, were enjoying the sight there as I walked up. The exact site is off Manhattan Ave. (low-level part of that park) and nearest W. 114th Street. Also seen were 18 additional species of birds in &/or over that park in 90 min’s. time. I’ve not seen nor heard of any other of that species on the ground in Manhattan, before this one for this year.
… Some earlier hours spent seeking potential waterthrushes were not fruitful in Central Park, for me. (A Louisiana Waterthrush had been seen by many in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park as early as Sunday, 3/22 and also in subsequent days there - that’s Brooklyn / Kings County, N.Y. City… I’ve not been; many reports on that & other nice species in that county are in eBird & elsewhere in reports). We may all see a good passage with more migrants in coming days for those able to get out and watch. good spatial-distancing & thus socially-acceptable birding, and a huge THANK YOU to all health-care providers - most doing very tough work!
