Some belated yet historical news for Brooklyn's natural history

Ornithology of the American Museum of Natural History alerted me a few weeks
ago of a small owl that was spotted roosting inside a backyard dense

The final species numbers breakdown by region for the Dec 19th Brooklyn
CBC plus a news coverage of the Prospect Park south team and the count dinner
by the Los Angeles Times is available thru my blog
Prospect Park Sightings for easy duo access.
I presume Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge is now under the
jurisdiction of the Walkill River National Refuge office (for dist 9) or US
Fish and Wildlife Service. The website addresses ,respectively are as

Three of the aforementioned Ring billed gulls on Prospect Lake-- all with
reddish pink round wing tags-- was reported to Patuxent Bird lab.I only
received a reply on two of the three birds. It appears that perhaps all were
from the region west of Boston.

A text from Dennis Hrehowsik 521 pm reports the Barnacle Goose still
present along the west shore of Prospect Lake. One should have a good chance

Below are the results for Kings County Christmas Birding Count Circle.
In the lowest count since 1981, with inclement snowy weather a factor among
other things, 110 species were recorded.
Reflecting the historic irruption of Snowy Owl this winter, it showed with a

EURASIAN WIGEON Prospect Lake
During my quick GBBC ,after work, i trudged down to the lakeshore along
the Peninsula Meadow. Noting a different duck that had me quite
intrigued, i got closer ,by ladder 18.It turns out,resting on the ice
edge,being a drake EURASIAN
The second southern US species ( not native to these parts ) appeared on the
current southern warm flow, a SWALLOW TAILED KITE that flew over the Lullwater
at 9 am , observed by Jennifer Plummer Kepler, who took a photo of the species.
A beautiful bird , very diagnostic and a perfect gliding
i received a 7:21 am twitter tweet from Mike Yuan that the Cassins is
back at yesterdays spot community garden in Floyd Bennett field.nearest

The dice continues to roll favorably with our two celebrity birds : PAINTED
BUNTING & BLACK-HEADED GULL.
With far fewer birders milling around, I went to see the Painted Bunting. It
seems to be exploring more of the green roof as now the Bunting moved to the
far north end of the Rink green
The PAINTED BUNTING male continues atop on the green roof of the Lefrak Rink.It
was seen feeding on the ground at noontime next to a black steam vent , between
that structure and the mesh fence on the south side at the summit.

Rink , BLACKHEADED GULL(BHGU) at the west shore or northwest Prospect Lake.The

Three of the aforementioned Ring billed gulls on Prospect Lake-- all with
reddish pink round wing tags-- was reported to Patuxent Bird lab.I only
received a reply on two of the three birds. It appears that perhaps all were
from the region west of Boston.
