Good morning all,

This morning I had an anhinga circling greenwood cemetery in brooklyn. 10 
minutes later another birder viewed it, or another bird, flying over the 
lullwater in prospect park.

We saw it today from the bridge at Convent Road looking north at about
8:35. It likes the bare tree to the right of the line of plants in the
back. I am told that is where it likes to often be. I suggest to get there
by 8:30 am. A young man showed us where to look. It also swims and dives.

Just saw the Anhinga twice from bridge at Blauvelt Road looking south.
It’s on the near east side of the lake and keeps disappearing behind
vegetation.--

The Anhinga was perched on a tree just north of Convent Bridge until just after 
11 AM. It started thermaling and circled incredibly high, but eventually began 
descending back towards the lake. It is currently sitting on another snag due 
south of Convent Road, still north of the New Jersey border at roughly this 
location.

After being absent for a while the Anhinga did a quick flight around the
lake at 9:10am as seen from the Blauvelt Rd bridge. It flew north up the
creek then back just south of the bridge and out of sight in the corner of
the lake at the following:

(41.0589230, -73.9819966)

It may be visible from the s side of the lake at Convent Rd.

Ari Weiss reports re-finding an anhinga reported to him last evening (not sure 
arrival date) on the Rockland County (NY) side of Lake Tappan -appears from pin 
it's being (or was) seen about an hour or so ago from causeway b/w Lake Tappan 
and Hackensack River on Blauvelt Road.
The brutally hot humid weather probably to the bird's liking considering its 
usual range.

- from any eBird page, click on 'My eBird" from the top menu
- in the left panel, select the 'Checklists' link under 'Manage My..."

- from this screen you can click 'Nearby Location on a Map'
- select the hotspot located in Churchville Park (the one just above
Churchville in the map)
- On the right side it should say 'Chosen Location: Churchville Park
(Monroe)'
- Click the green 'Continue' button

Hang on, was there an Anhinga in Central Park “a few years ago”? “Few” as
in 3? Or “few” as in 20? Depending on my current age and how I feel on a
given day, I know that word’s meaning can vary wildly in absolute value.

[nysbirds-l] ANHINGA over Onondaga Lake

I spotted an ANHINGA soaring over Onondaga Lake today around noon.

I had just returned to my car to leave after scanning the lake from the Willow 
Bay area on the north end of the lake.  I placed my scope in the trunk and had 
just closed my door after sitting down in the driver's seat when I spotted a 
black bird rising above the treetops.  It had a long thin neck and tail, and 
the tail ended in a spatulate bulb. The bird would flap...flap...flap...then 
soar and circle around and then flap...flap...flap...and soar again.  Each time 
it circled around I got a flash of white from each of its wings, and I believe 
I also saw a flash of white at the end of its tail.  The bird seemed like it 
had just risen from the lake and was quickly gaining altitude.

Then I did something you should never do when you are looking at a "good" bird 
- I took my eyes off it.  Ever so briefly.  But it was enough for me to not be 
able to find it again against the blue sky.  I foolishly tried to pop my trunk 
and retrieve my scope and camera to get a better look at it, and maybe even 
snap a quick photo or two, but ended up losing the bird altogether.

I searched the sky frantically trying to relocate the Anhinga, but it was in 
vain.  I did find a few birds in the sky - a Turkey Vulture, an Osprey, a 
distant buteo - but the Anhinga was no where to be found.  I went back to the 
lake to scan the surface again, just in case it returned, but I could not find 
it.  Not that I really expected to.  My impression was that the bird was on its 
way out and possibly headed in a westerly direction.

There were several Double-crested Cormorants flying up and down the lake all 
morning long while I was there.  When I spotted the Anhinga, it was easily 
distinguishable from the cormorants.  Both the neck and the tail appeared 
longer and thinner than the cormorant's - and the bird as a whole appeared to 
be much sleeker and thinner overall than its chunkier counterpart.

Also on the lake were 2 COMMON LOONS in breeding plumage and 7 BUFFLEHEAD (4 m, 
3 f) in the Willow Bay area.

At the marina in Liverpool there were 7 CASPIAN TERNS hanging with the 
RING-BILLED GULLS on the rocks, 2 FISH CROWS around the docks,and group of 
about 10 or so HOODED MERGANSERS just to the north of the marina.
