[nysbirds-l] Arctic Tern, Nickerson Beach, Nassau County
Hi All, Went looking for Roseate Terns this evening and photo'd a lone tern in front of the 'west colony' that nagged me as a potential Arctic Tern, upon further review of the 3 poor photos taken, there is enough there to show the right size and color of the legs and bill. I wanted to get the word out regarding this sighting! A note on the roseates,...There was 2 preening Roseate Terns in front of the 'west colony' that eventually flew into and sat in the roped off area together, and before that there was a lone roseate tern in front of the eastern colony. Re: [nysbirds-l] Arctic Tern Nickerson Beach Nassau
Yesterday there were very few loafing birds until around 10:00. Then flocks started to loaf at the wet area on the west side, where the western path from the parking lot comes in. There were three Roseates. 40.586838, -73.604113 Around 8:00 on the beach at the eastern tern colony I encountered a probable Common Tern that really had the jizz of an Arctic. Short legs, round head, compact body, very long wings. I posted some photos on the New York Facebook photo site. Following up on my earlier post. Two immature Bonaparte's Gulls showed up and loafed in the fresh (?) water pools on the beach. Also, 2 Royal Terns made a late appearance sometime after 4:00 pm as I was packing it in. My last count of Roseate Terns was at 9. Folks have been reporting the good Terns from Nickerson but I have seen no mention of the Gulls there...maybe I missed the reports. For anyone interested, I counted 17 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (LBBGs) of all ages amongst a mixed flock of Gulls. Many of the Herring Gulls with their bleached out and worn appearance were also a good study. Lastly, I was never able to reconnect with the Arctic Tern after my post. Unfortunately, there was an uptick in Beach traffic and the Tern colony never seemed to settle in as they were earlier.
