[nysbirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk
At a brief stop at Twin Lakes Park in Eastchester I had an adult Broad-winged Hawk circling over the parking lot off California Rd. First one I've had there in over 40 years as far as I can remember. [nysbirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk @ Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch, 15 Oct 2013
Today, an adult Broad-winged Hawk was observed near the tail of a stream of 55 Turkey Vulture that were passing directly over the watch platform at Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch--located just outside Mount Kisco (Region 9)--at ~12:45 EST. This bird was flying high enough to be almost undetectable without a binocular, and would have been too easy to miss had it opted to go it alone. Fortunately (for us), it didn't. [nysbirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk @ Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch (17 Aug 2013)
Today at Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch--just outside the village/town of Mount Kisco NY (Region 9), our first passage adult Broad-winged Hawk passed at height directly over the watch platform at ~8:50 EST. Until today (we began the count 15 August), we've only observed residents and dispersing juveniles. Also of note today was our first passage Cooper's Hawk, which also passed high over the platform at ~13:50. Yesterday, we also recorded 13 Common Nighthawk (only two of which were seen during normal count hours.) Fall is upon us!
