[nysbirds-l] Brown Booby on Staten Island

2021-05-27 Thread isaac grant
An adult Brown Booby was first found in NJ very close to NY waters. I was
able to re find it clearly on the New York side along with Seth Wollney.
Best public access to where it was flying around is at the intersection of
Van Name Avenue and Richmond Terrace. Look out towards NJ. Use these
coordinates 40.636885, -74.152865. There is a small pier you can walk out
on at a few feet away at the end of Van Pelt and Richmond Terrace.

Good luck if you go.

[nysbirds-l] Brown Booby+ Robert Moses SP, Suffolk County

2019-08-26 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Around 9:00 this morning an adult Brown Booby flew east to west past Robert
Moses SP, parking field 2. Its uniformly dark brown upperparts, head, and upper
breast were discernible, as was the sharp contrast between the last and the
white belly and underwing linings. Moreover, its flight style differed markedly
from that of Northern Gannet, of which several were also present, including
birds flying on the same bearing in relation to the northeasterly winds.
Specifically, its wingbeats were more rapid, powerful, and continuous than
those of a gannet, and the overall impression was of a significantly smaller
bird. Conversely, its very long, slim wings, long and pointed neck and head
projection, and long tail were all clearly those of a sulid and not a
shearwater, petrel, jaeger, or gull. The bird was quite distant, and I was
troubled that I was unable to make out the bill color. This might have been
attributable to the bill having a dull pale color that blended in with the tone
of the background water and sky.

This was the last bird I saw during a generally slow seawatch, because I quit
after it passed and raced around to the other side of the Fire Island Inlet, on
the chance that the booby might enter and fly past or perch. Earlier, over the
course of an hour I saw a close Manx Shearwater, an adult-like Parasitic Jaeger
(w to e), and at least five Northern Gannets, but very little else. These
observations, together with those yesterday morning of Manx Shearwater at Sagg
Main Beach and Cory's Shearwaters there and off Shinnecock Inlet, suggest an
improvement over the past several weeks' dismal seawatching conditions--perhaps
attributable to the recent northeasterly winds. We also saw Humpback Whales and
Bottlenose Dolphins at a couple of sites yesterday.

"It landed right after we struck sail late afternoon (8/3) and stayed right
before we docked, then flew off towards storm king mountain."

No other details however. Also this serves a s a good reminder to keep your

don't think the bird would have been reported otherwise!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Brown booby

2019-08-04 Thread David Chernack
I commented on their Instagram post to ask for more details and got this
response:

"It landed right after we struck sail late afternoon (8/3) and stayed right
before we docked, then flew off towards storm king mountain."

No other details however. Also this serves a s a good reminder to keep your
eyes peeled on social media or other non-traditional places for rarities, I
don't think the bird would have been reported otherwise!

Just passing this report along from the CT-Birds listserve- no specifics

Subject: A lifer for me.
Date: Tue Jul 30 2019 12:59 pm

While I am at my childhood home on Fire Island and not in Connecticut, I wanted
to share with my CT birding family I saw

2017-10-20 Thread susan joseph
The Brown Booby is still present now st 4PM at Lake Montauk. It can be seen
from Star Island Road, sitting on a green Channel Marker, #11.

On Star Island Rd, proceed to the Snug Harbor Marina building and find a
parking spot in the lot just past it. Cross to the other side of the road
and look out over the lake. If you walk too far past the “Mickey’s” white
dumpster in the lot, the channel marker won’t be visible behind the point
of land on the left and you won’t be able to see the bird. The bird is
distant and hard to see in this location even with binoculars.

FYI yesterday the booby was frequenting the south end of Lake Montauk and was
perched on the mast of a boat with a dark blue hull. Views were from the beach
at the end of South Lake Drive. When it's roosting at this location one can
actually obtain decent photos with a telephoto lens since the bird is much
closer to shore than when it's on the Maui or the green marker and one is
looking from Star Island Road.

Photos from yesterday are in my eBird checklist here:

Brown Booby seen intermittently on green marker to left of Maui sailboat from
Star Island Road. (Green marker not visible from further end of causeway.) It
appears to be enjoying the constant drizzle, preening, then flying off.
