This owl has been around for over a year.I have mating GHOW nest in nearby BBA
(was told by resident) after mating season.I have not seen this owl with
mate.Unfortunately, haven’t posting site or photos of this owl because of
problems with photographers.I was just harassed by trespassing photographer

Hi Larry and all,

That is certainly a striking looking owl and a candidate for B. v. subarcticus

Salzman (1998, in "Bull's Birds of New York State") cites three specimens of
Subarctic Great Horned Owl in NYS, from Erie, Bronx, and Suffolk Counties, and
mentions specimens from NJ and CT as well.

In case you are considering writing this up for NYSARC and/or The Kingbird,
note that the date of the old Bronx specimen (AMNH 144845) is given as 15 Feb
1910 by Salzman, but as 15 Feb 1919 by Parkes (who directly examined the
specimen, in his 1952 Cornell PhD dissertation).

Saturday, Justin Muratore and I located the FEHA on Onion Ave at 8:30 am.  The
bird circle the field and perched in a tree very close to the road.  It offered
amazing looks before heading East over the tree line towards Celery Ave.

The more amazing bits of the day, for me at least, was the adult subarcticus
Great Horned Owl.  This subspecies as far as I can tell hasn’t been in the
lower 48 outside of MN.  The bright with GHOW stood out like a sore thumb.  We
sat there on the side of the road waiting for the line of speeding cars,
heading off the the next FEHA sighting, to pass and then we just had this quiet
moment watching this unreal visitor from the north.

Photos of the owl, and hawk, can be seen here :

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ferruginous Hawk and another state first

2021-01-25 Thread Richard Veit
there are at least two extant specimens of *B.v. wapacuthu* from
massachusetts, and apparently there was quite a "flight" of these in
1917-19 (Bull 1964; Veit and Petersen 1993))

Hi Larry and all,

That is certainly a striking looking owl and a candidate for B. v. subarcticus
(=wapacuthu in much 20th Century literature).

We
sat there on the side of the road waiting for the line of speeding cars,
heading off the the next FEHA sighting, to pass and then we just had this quiet
moment watching this unreal visitor from the north.

mentions specimens from NJ and CT as well.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ferruginous Hawk Jan 23rd?

2021-01-23 Thread Robert Lewis
Some advice to today's seekers.

I've been on the pilgrimage four times.  The first two without luck, the second
two with good luck.  The last two times, it seems that the bird has become
fairly predictable.  It is first seen from Celery or Onion around 8:30 perched
in trees.  It is usually pretty far from the observer.  Between then and around
12:30 it is seen soaring, flying, or perched on the ground in the middle of a
big field.  Cedar Swamp Road and Celery Road overlook the same vast fields.
Onion is slightly to the west and, looking east from there, one sees some field
and some trees for the bird to perch in.  A good scope is essential.

Your best hope for a really good view is that you'll find the bird in a field
or tree and it will take off and fly very close to you.  Good luck!

Apparently it has not been seen recently from Pierce or Lynch.  Also, it is
hard to find after about 1:00.  Correct me if I am wrong.

If anyone has time after the Ferruginous Hawk, it's well worth it to hit up
the Soons Orchards market off County Road 12 and have a celebratory spirit
or burger at Orchard Hill Cider Mill. It's in the same parking lot behind
the farmer's market. COVID safe as it is cozy! Let's support the locals
after clogging the berms of their roads. Good luck everybody!

[nysbirds-l] Ferruginous Hawk - Another Perspective

2021-01-20 Thread Steve Walter
While many people have been thrilled to add Ferruginous Hawk to their life
and / or state lists, I have a different perspective. I've posted before
about the Winter Raptor Survey that I've done covering the Black Dirt Region
and the Wallkill Wildlife Refuge area. How fortuitous that the Ferrug showed
up in the coverage area. But then why not? It's obvious to us and the
raptors that it's a great area for raptors. So I moved this year's survey up
a week or two from normal, hoping to get the Ferrug while the trail was
still warm (and to take advantage of the extra eyes in the area -- thanks
Adrian and Anne). I'm pretty sure it's the first Ferrug on an eastern WRS,
but I'll check on that later.

WRS results and instructions on how to do one can be found at the web site
of the Hawk Migration Association of North America (HMANA - www.hmana.org
). WRS is under Research & Conservation. Accessing
results may require a logon ID, but discussion has been had to make it more
public. So to make it easy, noteworthy numbers yesterday were 26 Red-tailed
Hawks, 5 Rough-legged Hawks, 3 Red-shouldered Hawks, 9 Northern Harriers, 3
American Kestrels, and 2 Peregrine Falcons. It's actually the first time
that I've recorded Red-shouldered here, making for 4 species of Buteo. That
very well could be unprecedented on an eastern North America WRS (there are
5 species wintering in Florida, but habitat choice keeps them separated).
One of the Red-shoulders is a rather tame (for the north) immature that was
sitting on wires on Oil City Road, right at the parking lot at one point.
Great photo ops if it continues.

Only 3 Black Vultures were recorded in the survey area. But worth a mention
that where I stopped to get breakfast in Chester, at routes 94 and 17M,
there were at least 12 sitting on roofs in the shopping center.

I've posted a picture of the Ferrug at my web site
http://stevewalternature.com/ . The photo was taken from County Road 6
(Pulaski Highway).
